How to clean Invisalign aligners day to day
- Remove the aligners. Take them out before cleaning and set them somewhere clean while you prepare.
- Brush gently. Invisalign patient instructions describe using a soft-bristled toothbrush, water and a small amount of toothpaste.
- Rinse thoroughly. Rinse away residue before reinserting the aligners. The manufacturer instructions also say to rinse under warm running water if a toothbrush or cleaning system is unavailable. Use warm or cool water, not hot water. Heat can damage aligners; Invisalign’s Cleaning Crystals+ product instructions specifically caution against hot water.
Eating, drinking and reinserting your aligners
Remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than tap water. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) gives this guidance and recommends brushing your teeth before reinserting aligners. After a meal or other drink, clean your teeth before putting the trays back in. Keep your case with you when you leave home so you have a safe place for aligners while eating. Your orthodontist can advise what to do if brushing is not practical in a particular situation.

How to store aligners when they are out
Put removed aligners in their case rather than leaving them loose on a table, wrapping them in a napkin or placing them in a pocket. A case helps keep them together and protected while they are not being worn. Follow your provider’s instructions for any additional cleaning or storage steps.
Are Invisalign Cleaning Crystals+ necessary?
No. Cleaning Crystals+ is an optional branded cleaning method, not a universal requirement. Invisalign describes it as a no-brush soak; routine brushing and rinsing are also described in the company’s patient instructions. Using Cleaning Crystals+
- Add one capful of crystals to 100 ml of warm water.
- Fully submerge the aligners and stir for 20 seconds.
- Soak for 15 minutes, then rinse the aligners thoroughly.
Invisalign’s product instructions say, “Soak aligners or retainers in the mixture for 15 minutes.” These directions apply to Cleaning Crystals+, not to every aligner-cleaning product. The product page says not to use hot water. Check the current Cleaning Crystals+ instructions.
