Its infinite canvas and familiar drawing tools make it useful for quick visuals; the hosted Excalidraw.com app adds browser-based collaboration and sharing, while Excalidraw+ is an optional paid workspace for cloud saving and team features.
What is Excalidraw?
Excalidraw is a browser-based drawing editor built around a casual, hand-drawn look. You can place shapes, add text and arrows, sketch freehand, and arrange the elements on an infinite canvas. It also supports images and shape libraries, with tools for zooming, panning, undo and redo, plus dark mode and customization. The project describes its editor and available formats in its official GitHub repository.
The sketch-like style can make a diagram feel informal and easy to revise rather than like a polished technical drawing. Excalidraw lists meetings, brainstorming, diagrams, interviews and quick wireframing among its uses; examples include UML diagrams and presentations on its official site.
How do I use Excalidraw?
- Open the editor: Go to Excalidraw.com to start drawing in the hosted app.
- Lay out the idea: Add shapes for the main parts of your diagram, then add text labels. Use arrows to show relationships or direction, and arrange the items across the canvas.
- Refine the drawing: Use free drawing for informal marks, and zoom or pan when you need to work on a larger scene. Undo and redo help as you revise.
- Choose how to keep or share it: Export an image for a document or presentation, copy the drawing to the clipboard, or save an editable scene in Excalidraw’s JSON format.
Is Excalidraw free?
The core editor is open source and free. The hosted app and the embeddable npm package are distinct surfaces: the repository documents Excalidraw.com as a showcase of what can be built with the editor, so do not assume that every hosted-app feature is included in a package integration.

Excalidraw+ is a separate paid workspace. The official pricing page, checked October 4, 2026, listed a Free plan described as “Free forever” and a Plus plan at USD $6 per user per month. Prices and feature availability can change.

The pricing page says the Free personal library is stored in the browser, while the Plus personal library is saved on the server. This is separate from the hosted app README’s statement that the browser app autosaves locally.

Can you collaborate in Excalidraw?
Yes. The Excalidraw.com hosted app supports real-time collaboration, and its README documents end-to-end encryption and shareable read-only links. The Free plan lists unlimited collaborators. Excalidraw+ adds workspace-oriented options such as access management, edit and view rights, comments, voice hangouts and screensharing. Check the current plan details if a particular permission or sharing setup is essential.
These hosted-app capabilities should not be assumed to come with every Excalidraw integration. The project also lists a VS Code extension and npm package, and names ecosystem examples including Obsidian Excalidraw, Notion, Replit and CodeSandbox. Those are integration examples, not endorsements or evidence that each has identical features.

How do I export an Excalidraw drawing?
The editor supports PNG and SVG image exports, clipboard export and the editable .excalidraw JSON format. Choose an image format when you want to place the finished diagram in documentation or slides. Use the JSON scene format when you want to preserve the drawing as an editable Excalidraw scene. Excalidraw+’s pricing page also lists PDF and PPTX export among its newer features; confirm current availability on the plan page before relying on those formats.
When should you consider Excalidraw+?
For a quick diagram or sketch, the free editor is the straightforward starting point. Consider Plus if you need its cloud-saved scenes, folders, team administration or more granular sharing controls. Its pricing page also describes text-to-diagram and wireframe-to-code capabilities on the product site, while the plan comparison distinguishes limited generative AI on Free from extended AI on Plus. These AI and MCP features are changing quickly; check the current Excalidraw+ site for what is available to your plan.
