Pinokio is a Linux desktop launcher that automates installing and running AI apps; it is not an AI model itself. The official download page lists AppImage, DEB, and RPM packages for x64 and ARM64. Choose the package matching your system, then check the requirements of each app you install—Pinokio does not make every app compatible with every Linux computer.
What Pinokio does on Linux
Pinokio describes itself as “a browser that lets you install, run, and automate any AI applications and models automatically and effortlessly.” In practice, it provides a directory for discovering community-built AI apps, agents, and local services, then uses scripts to automate setup and launching.
Those scripts can package command-line tasks, install dependencies, and start a local server. Pinokio’s documentation says it bundles common utilities such as Node.js/NPM, Python/Pip, and Git, which can reduce prerequisite setup for many apps. That does not mean every app’s dependencies are included or that setup never needs manual attention.
Choose the right Linux download
Use the official Pinokio download page, which directs Linux users to the project’s release page. It lists three package types for two CPU architectures:

| Package | Architectures listed | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| AppImage | x64 and ARM64 | Check that your system can run the selected AppImage and follow the release’s instructions. |
| DEB | x64 and ARM64 | Choose this when the package suits your distribution’s package environment. |
| RPM | x64 and ARM64 | Choose this when the package suits your distribution’s package environment. |
The official materials do not provide a complete distribution-by-distribution compatibility matrix. Confirm that the asset matches your CPU architecture and distribution, and follow instructions for the specific release. Avoid relying on generic installation commands that may not fit the package or system you selected.
Install Pinokio and find an AI app
- Identify your system. Check whether your Linux system uses x64 or ARM64, and note which package formats its distribution supports.
- Download from the official source. Open the Pinokio download page and follow its link to the release page.
- Select a matching asset. Choose AppImage, DEB, or RPM for your system and architecture. Use the release’s own installation or launch instructions for that asset.
- Open Pinokio and browse Discover. Find an app that fits your intended task, then review its publisher, source, and available installation details.
- Check the app’s requirements before installing. Consult the app’s own instructions for operating-system, hardware, model, and dependency needs. Pinokio’s package options do not establish that a particular app or model will run on your computer.
- Review the script and proceed deliberately. Pinokio automates setup through scripts; check the script’s origin and what it will do before allowing it to run.
Can Pinokio install AI apps without terminal commands?
Pinokio is designed to automate command-line tasks through scripts, so many setup steps can be handled from its app interface rather than entered manually. However, “no terminal required” is not a guarantee: an app may have additional prerequisites, ask for manual configuration, or require troubleshooting. The project’s inclusion of common utilities such as Python/Pip, Node.js/NPM, and Git helps with some setups, but does not cover every app-specific dependency.

What to know before running an installation script
Pinokio scripts can execute commands, download files, and run code. The project says Discover scripts are manually listed, tracked through Git, frozen under the official organization, reviewed, and tested. That describes Pinokio’s stated process, not an independent security audit or a guarantee that every script is safe.
- Use the official Pinokio download route rather than an unrelated mirror.
- Check an app’s source and publisher, and prefer entries whose origin and review status are clear.
- Understand that automation does not remove the need to assess code that can run on your machine.
- Check the target app’s installation guidance and requirements, especially when it downloads models or other executable components.
The project describes default locations for app scripts and binaries under ~/pinokio and checks for app paths, virtual environments, and package locations. These design choices do not prevent every script from intentionally acting outside those locations.

Hardware and compatibility depend on the app
The official Pinokio materials do not establish a universal Linux distribution list or baseline for RAM, disk space, GPU, or drivers. Pinokio is the launcher and automation layer; the AI app and model you choose determine much of what your system needs. Check those requirements before downloading large files or starting an installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pinokio or manual setup?
Pinokio can make discovery and repeatable setup more convenient by automating commands and dependency installation. Manual setup can offer more direct visibility and control over commands and environments, which may help when troubleshooting or when you want to manage dependencies yourself. The best fit depends on whether you prioritize convenience or hands-on control; the project materials do not provide a performance comparison between the two approaches.
