Sometimes—but a charger is safe to use only when it meets the requirements of your exact laptop and charging port. A plug that fits, or a USB-C connector that looks right, is not enough. Check the laptop’s documented input, the port’s charging capability, and the charger’s output before connecting it.

What makes a different charger compatible?

Compatibility depends on more than one number. Confirm that the laptop accepts power through the port you plan to use, that the charger uses a supported charging standard, and that its electrical output and connector meet the laptop’s requirements. Use an approved or properly certified adapter; Lenovo warns that a disqualified charger may damage a computer or create an electrical hazard (Lenovo charger guidance).

USB-C: verify charging support on that port

USB-C describes the connector, not whether a particular port can receive power. Dell says USB-C charging capability varies by platform, and Lenovo manuals identify supported ports and model-specific limits (Dell USB-C guidance; Legion 5 16IRX9 manual). Check the manual for your exact model to see whether the port accepts power and whether it requires USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). A USB-C charger without the required support may not charge the computer.

Barrel or proprietary plugs: match the documented requirements

For a conventional charger, compare its output voltage, connector, and wattage with the laptop’s manual. Lenovo says a higher-wattage adapter can work when its voltage matches and its connector fits; Dell likewise directs owners to the exact model documentation for connector and wattage requirements (Lenovo power-adapter guidance; Dell guidance). Do not assume that matching one specification makes the combination suitable: follow the full requirements for the model.

Does a higher-wattage charger damage a laptop?

A higher wattage rating alone does not mean the charger forces all of that power into the laptop. It can be suitable when the laptop’s documented voltage, connector, and other requirements are met. The wattage rating is not permission to disregard those requirements, and it does not establish that an adapter is approved for the device.

What if the charger has lower output?

An underpowered charger may charge slowly, may charge only while the laptop is asleep or off, or may not charge at all. On some models, the laptop may also struggle to sustain charging while running or may limit performance. The result depends on the model, port, charger, and workload; check the manual rather than assuming one outcome applies to every laptop.

Two model-specific examples

  • Lenovo Legion 5 16IRX9: Its manual says a USB-C port marked with the USB-PD icon can use a qualified Power Delivery-compliant charger. It lists tested ratings of 20 V at 4.75 A, 5 A, 6.75 A, or 7 A. The manual says this port is not the primary input; charging during operation may be slow, limited, or stop. These figures apply to this model, not laptops generally (manual details).
  • Lenovo ThinkBook 16p Gen 4: Its manual specifies USB-C input of at least 20 V and 2.25 A. It says 20 V at 2.25 A or 3.25 A can charge in sleep, hibernation, or powered-off states, while less than 20 V and 2.25 A cannot charge this computer. The port is not designed as the primary power input. These thresholds are specific to this model (manual details).

How to check your laptop and charger

  1. Identify the exact laptop model. Find the model name or number on the computer or in its system information, then open its manufacturer manual or support page.
  2. Confirm the charging port. Check whether the particular port accepts power. For USB-C, look for explicit USB-PD support or the manufacturer’s stated charging instructions; do not infer it from the connector alone.
  3. Read the laptop’s input requirements. Note the required voltage, wattage or current, connector type, and any charging-standard requirement stated for that port.
  4. Read the charger label. Compare its output ratings and connector with the laptop documentation. If the manual does not establish that the charger is suitable, use a charger approved for that model or ask the manufacturer.
  5. Use a sound, approved adapter. Do not use an adapter or cable that is damaged or shows signs of an electrical fault.

Signs the adapter is not working properly

Stop and recheck compatibility if the laptop will not charge, shows an adapter warning, or reduces performance. Dell lists these among possible symptoms of an unrecognized or insufficient adapter (Dell troubleshooting guidance). These symptoms do not by themselves identify the cause, so compare the adapter with the exact model requirements and use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions.

How to choose between two chargers

Choose the option whose compatibility is documented for your laptop—not simply the one with the closest-looking plug or the largest wattage number. Compare the ports and standards first, then the electrical ratings, ability to meet the laptop’s needs during your expected workload, and the charger’s approval or certification. If the documentation does not clearly support either option, use the charger specified by the laptop maker.
