If an AI-branded money app shows a transfer you did not authorize—or sent the wrong amount—report it promptly through the official channel of the bank or credit union connected to the money. If the app or another provider handled the transfer, notify that provider too. Save the transaction details and proof of each report. The app’s AI label alone does not determine which rules or provider duties apply.
What to do first
- Check the account record. Confirm the amount, date, recipient or transaction description, and whether the item is pending or posted. Save a screenshot of the app display and the relevant account notification or statement.
- Report the problem to the account-holding bank or credit union. Use the phone number or secure in-app channel shown by the institution—not contact details from an unexpected message. State whether the transfer was unauthorized or incorrect, and ask how to submit a formal notice of error.
- Notify the app or transfer provider if it handled the payment. Keep the date and method of contact, the case or confirmation number, and a copy of what you reported. Do not assume the app is the only organization you need to contact.
- Secure access if you suspect compromise. If a phone, card, password, or account access may be exposed, use the institution’s official process to block, replace, or secure it. Do this promptly, but do not postpone reporting the disputed transfer while securing access.
- Keep a timeline and monitor the account. Record later transactions, fees, messages, and any provisional credit. If the institution asks you to confirm an oral report in writing, follow its instructions promptly; failing to provide requested written confirmation can affect provisional credit.
Keep the records that help you explain what happened: transaction date and amount, recipient or description, screenshots, statements, messages, and report confirmations. This is practical recordkeeping, not a prescribed statutory evidence checklist.
Who should receive the report?
Start with the bank or credit union that holds the account, especially if the transfer appears on its statement. Also report it to the app or other provider that initiated, transmitted, or serviced the payment. The relevant provider may depend on how the money moved and each company’s role.
Under Regulation E, certain non-bank electronic fund transfer service providers can have duties to investigate and resolve errors even when they do not hold the consumer’s account. Where the rule specifies, fees resulting from an error must also be reimbursed. A provider should not automatically send you elsewhere instead of handling a notice it is responsible for.

A 2025 CFPB consent order involving Block, Inc. described cases in which users were directed to contact their bank, a merchant, or law enforcement rather than the provider handling the notice. That order concerns its specific case; it is not a general ruling about every AI app, nor does it establish that any particular consumer will recover money.
When Regulation E may apply
Regulation E implements federal rules under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act for covered electronic fund transfers (EFTs). The CFPB’s Regulation E FAQs identify both “an unauthorized EFT” and “an incorrect EFT to or from the consumer’s account” as examples of errors. An unauthorized EFT is generally a transfer made without actual authority and from which the consumer receives no benefit, subject to the rule’s definitions and exceptions.

Coverage is not determined by whether an app calls itself AI-powered. It depends on the account, transfer method, facts, and the roles of the financial institution and any service provider. Some transactions and accounts fall outside the rule or are governed by other requirements. The CFPB consumer guidance is for the United States; if the account or payment is outside the US, local law may differ.
Deadlines and investigation periods
Report immediately rather than waiting for a deadline. Regulation E’s timing rules can affect responsibility for certain later transfers, and the investigation periods below apply only to covered errors and depend on the circumstances.

| Timing | What it can mean |
|---|---|
| Within two business days after learning an access device was lost or stolen | Under Regulation E, timely notice can preserve a lower liability ceiling. If notice is delayed, potential liability for later transfers may increase if the institution establishes that timely notice would have prevented them. |
| Within 60 days after the institution sends the statement showing an unauthorized transfer | Reporting within this period generally helps avoid liability for certain later transfers. This is not a reason to wait if you discover the problem earlier. |
| Generally 10 business days after notice | The institution generally must investigate a covered error and report its result within this initial period. If it cannot finish, the usual extended-investigation route requires provisional credit within the initial period, subject to conditions and exceptions. |
| Generally 20 business days in specified new-account cases | Regulation E provides a longer initial period for certain transfers involving new accounts. |
| Generally 45 days; up to 90 days in specified cases | When the rule’s conditions for an extended investigation are met, the usual completion period is 45 days. Certain new-account, foreign-initiated, or point-of-sale debit cases can allow up to 90 days. |
These periods are general summaries, not a guarantee that every claim will receive provisional credit or follow the same schedule. For covered disputes, the CFPB consumer guidance says that after an investigation the consumer can request the information used to make the decision. The CFPB consumer page was last reviewed August 28, 2026; consult the applicable Regulation E provisions for the details and exceptions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the claim is denied or not handled properly
- Ask for the decision and the information the provider used to investigate, and keep copies of the response and your request.
- Use the institution’s or provider’s official escalation channel if the matter remains unresolved. You can also consider submitting a complaint to the CFPB or contacting another regulator appropriate to the institution and product. A complaint does not guarantee a particular outcome.
- If the facts suggest identity theft—for example, someone opened an account or used your identity without permission—consider the FTC’s identity-theft reporting and recovery resources as a separate step. A mistaken or disputed transfer does not by itself establish identity theft.
Regulation E’s notice and liability rules have specific definitions, exclusions, and provider-role limits. For a complicated dispute, the account agreement, transfer records, and applicable law may matter alongside the app’s explanation.
