It is an important example of the dual-GPU flagship approach, but its launch-era performance claims need context—and AMD now classifies the card as legacy hardware with no further driver releases planned for its series.
What was the Radeon HD 7990?
AMD launched the Radeon HD 7990 on April 24, 2013, positioning it as a premium gaming card and comparing it with Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 690. AMD called it the “world’s fastest” graphics card in its announcement; that was the company’s launch claim, not an unqualified independent finding. Its stated US manufacturer’s suggested retail price was $999.
The card combined two GPUs on one long PCB. TechSpot’s contemporary review lists a 1 GHz core clock and a length of 30 cm (about 12 inches), dimensions that matter when considering a period-correct PC build. The dual-GPU design could deliver high performance when a game and its drivers made effective use of both processors, but scaling was not automatic in every title.
How were its GPUs and memory arranged?
The HD 7990 had 6 GB of GDDR5 in total, allocated as 3 GB for each GPU. That headline total does not mean a single rendering workload can use the card as if it had one unified 6 GB frame buffer. With multi-GPU rendering, each processor generally needs access to the resources for its own work; the two memory pools are not simply combined into one ordinary shared pool.

- 【Independently Power】No external power supply, about 19W full-load power consumption.Works with Windows 10 as well as 7, 8 and 8.1(NOT compatible with windows 11).
What did AMD claim about performance?
AMD’s February 28, 2013 comparison reported a 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme score of 6,407 for the HD 7990 and 5,316 for the GTX 690. AMD also reported higher average performance in its selected Crysis 3 tests at 1080p and 1600p. These are vendor results, not a guarantee of how the cards performed across all games.
AMD specified the test platform as a Core i7-3960X system with an MSI X79A-GD65 motherboard, 16 GB of DDR3-1600 memory, and Windows 8 x64. It used Catalyst 13.2 Beta 6 for the HD 7990 and ForceWare 310.90 WHQL for the GTX 690. Benchmark results should be read in that software and hardware context, particularly because multi-GPU scaling depends on the game and driver support.
TechSpot’s 2013 review provides a separate contemporary perspective, describing the HD 7990 as two flagship GPUs on one long PCB. Its figures offer useful evidence about that review’s test system, not a universal forecast for every PC or workload.

What were the power and temperature tradeoffs?
In TechSpot’s test, total system power consumption reached 491 W. That was 22% higher than the GTX 690 system result and 36% higher than the result with one Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. These are reviewer measurements for the complete test system, not card-only power figures or a prediction for every build.
TechSpot recorded a maximum temperature of 72°C in its test. That result is specific to its sample, workload, test setup, and cooling conditions; it does not establish the temperature another HD 7990 will reach in a different case or environment.
What did Eyefinity and the launch bundle offer?
AMD advertised Eyefinity support for up to six simultaneous displays. Its launch announcement cautioned that the supported number, type, and resolution of displays varied with the board model and design. It recommended DisplayPort-ready monitors for configurations with more than two displays and noted that extra hardware might be required. For a particular card, check its actual outputs and the requirements of the intended monitor setup rather than treating six displays as a universal guarantee.

AMD also announced an eight-title “Never Settle: Reloaded” game bundle. Codes were offered through participating retailers from April 16, 2013, until October 1, 2013, or until codes ran out, whichever came first. This was a dated launch promotion, not a current offer.
What is the HD 7990’s driver support today?
AMD’s HD 7990 support page labels the product as legacy. For Windows 10 64-bit, the page lists AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 22.6.1 Recommended (WHQL), dated June 23, 2022. AMD’s legacy-support information says no additional driver releases are planned for the HD 7700–7900 series. Check AMD’s HD 7990 driver page for the current listing and the legacy support FAQ for AMD’s policy.
AMD recommends retaining or installing the final available driver for legacy hardware. Its installation guidance also advises caution when mixing legacy and non-legacy products, as issues such as performance drops, game crashes, or system errors may occur. See AMD’s driver installation guidance for those qualifications.

Is the Radeon HD 7990 still worth buying?
It may make sense for a collector or someone building a retro PC around hardware and software from its era. Its dual-GPU design, launch price, and place in AMD’s 2013 lineup make it historically notable. That is different from recommending it as a current gaming upgrade: the available evidence does not establish modern-game performance or broad present-day compatibility, and AMD’s listed support is legacy.
A purchase decision depends on the exact card and build. Check the board’s condition, seller, outputs, case clearance, operating system, and intended games before committing. Current listing availability, used-market value, and the compatibility of any particular system are not established here.
Verdict
The HD 7990 was an ambitious 2013 flagship that put two GPUs on one board and paired them with 6 GB of split GDDR5 memory. Contemporary benchmarks and power readings show why it drew attention, while its dependence on multi-GPU support and substantial system power illustrate the tradeoffs of the design. Today it is best understood as a historical or retro-build component, not a broadly supported modern gaming recommendation.
