For reliable humanitarian aid and displacement updates for Tigray, start with IOM’s Ethiopia Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), UNHCR Ethiopia’s operational data portal and protection-monitoring reports, and ReliefWeb, OCHA’s curated humanitarian information service. UNICEF situation reports add child-focused and broader response updates. For every claim, record the publisher, publication date, the period the data describe, the geographic coverage, and the population definition. These sources are not interchangeable live feeds, and the evidence reviewed does not establish one consolidated current figure for Tigray.

Where to look for Tigray updates

IOM Ethiopia Displacement Tracking Matrix

Use the IOM Ethiopia DTM portal to find displacement assessments and snapshots. Its results include a Tigray Region Snapshot Report for Household Needs Assessment Round 1, August 2025. Open the underlying report before quoting a figure: check its reference period, geographic coverage, and definitions rather than relying on a result title or summary.

UNHCR Ethiopia data and protection monitoring

The UNHCR Ethiopia Operational Data Portal lists dated population-movement records and refugee and IDP statistical documents. Its displayed total of 1,125,947 refugees and asylum-seekers is as of 30 June 2026; it is not a count of Tigray IDPs.

For detail on conditions and how they were assessed, consult location-specific UNHCR Protection Monitoring and Solutions reports. For example, the Adigrat December 2025 report, published 2 March 2026, describes focus groups, key-informant interviews, service-facility mapping, and direct observation. Attribute its findings to that report and locality: Adigrat-specific monitoring does not establish conditions across all of Tigray.

ReliefWeb and OCHA

ReliefWeb’s Ethiopia page is useful for discovering curated humanitarian reports, maps, and infographics from multiple organizations. OCHA describes ReliefWeb as “a humanitarian information service provided by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)” and says its editorial team curates content for humanitarian workers and decision-makers. See the OCHA IM Toolbox ReliefWeb overview. When you find an item on ReliefWeb, follow it to the publishing agency’s original report where possible and verify the definitions there.

UNICEF Ethiopia situation reports

UNICEF Ethiopia’s humanitarian situation reports provide child-focused and multisector response information. Its year-end 2025 report says UNICEF launched a Tigray IDP return-support plan in October 2025, covering an estimated 574,000 IDPs, and that large-scale movements back to areas of origin had not occurred because constraints persisted at the time covered. Treat this as a dated statement from that report, not as a description of conditions in October 2026.

How to check whether an update is comparable

Before using a number or describing a change, compare the source on these points. A mismatch on any of them can make two updates unsuitable for a direct comparison.

  • Publisher and source type: distinguish an original assessment or statistics sheet from a secondary summary or curated listing.
  • Publication date and data date: record both. A recently published plan may repeat older data.
  • Geographic coverage: note whether the data cover Tigray as a region, a zone, a woreda, or an individual site.
  • Population category: keep IDPs, IDP returnees, refugees, and asylum-seekers separate.
  • Method and definitions: read how the organization gathered information and what it counted before interpreting the figure.

What the published figures say—and what they do not

The following values come from different reports and reference dates; they are not one continuous series. Keep each figure attached to its source, date, and population category.

Publisher and source Figure Reference date and scope
UNHCR Ethiopia, 2025 statistics sheet 1,919,993 internally displaced people Ethiopia, as of 31 December 2025
UNHCR Ethiopia, 2025 statistics sheet 2,813,489 IDP returnees Ethiopia, as of 31 December 2025
UNHCR Ethiopia, 2025 statistics sheet 761,284 IDPs Tigray, as of 31 December 2025
UNHCR Ethiopia, 2025 statistics sheet 1,123,137 IDP returnees Tigray, as of 31 December 2025
UNICEF Ethiopia, year-end 2025 situation report An estimated 574,000 IDPs included in a Tigray return-support plan Plan launched in October 2025; large-scale returns had not occurred at the time covered
IOM, 2026 plan citing IOM DTM 3.3 million IDPs in Ethiopia Data refer to May 2024, not 2026
IOM, 2026 plan citing IOM DTM 2.58 million returning IDPs in Ethiopia, with 38% in Tigray Data refer to May 2024, not 2026

The UNHCR figures and IOM’s older DTM-based figures have different reference dates and source contexts, so do not calculate a trend by comparing them as if they were measured on the same day or under identical definitions. The returnee figures are also a separate category from people currently displaced.

How to describe the latest information responsibly

The cited material does not establish a single live, consolidated October 2026 figure for Tigray displacement or a current region-wide account of aid delivery and humanitarian access. For a present-tense claim, check the newest dated OCHA, cluster, agency, or partner update available on the source portals. If no current report is available, state the latest reference date you can verify instead of implying that an older figure is current.
