Intel’s launch-era Arrow Lake figures do not establish a specific IPC gain over Alder Lake. Intel’s estimates, reported as 9% for P-cores and 32% for E-cores, describe improvements over the previous generation and are clock-normalized projections with a stated margin of error—not a direct, independently measured Arrow Lake-versus-Alder Lake result.
What Intel’s Arrow Lake IPC figures mean
IPC, or instructions per cycle, describes how much instruction work a processor core can complete at a given clock under specified conditions. It is not the same as overall application speed: that also depends on clock frequency, core count and type, software, memory behavior, power limits, and the test platform.
Arrow Lake-S, the desktop family marketed as Intel Core Ultra 200S, has distinct performance (P) cores and efficiency (E) cores. Intel’s reported 9% P-core and 32% E-core IPC improvements are separate figures for those core types, not one combined uplift for the whole processor. ComputerBase reported the figures in its October 24, 2024 review.
Why those figures do not prove an Alder Lake comparison
The available reporting describes the 9% and 32% values as generational improvements; it does not establish Alder Lake as the exact comparison baseline. Calling them gains “over Alder Lake” would therefore assign a baseline the figures do not demonstrate.

There is another qualification: Intel’s August 2024 Arrow Lake-S briefing described internal performance projections across a set of tests at the same frequency (iso-frequency) and gave them a ±10% margin of error. These are projections under a defined method, not a universal result observed in every application or an independent review measurement. See Intel’s IFA Arrow Lake-S press briefing.
What real-world benchmarks can—and cannot—show
Benchmarks measure performance in particular workloads and test configurations; they do not isolate IPC unless the method controls for the factors that affect results. TechSpot reported the Core Ultra 9 285K as 13% faster than the Core i9-14900K in its single-core comparison. That is a benchmark result against Raptor Lake, not an IPC percentage or a direct comparison with Alder Lake. The result is specific to TechSpot’s tests, not a promise of the same gain in every application. See its October 24, 2024 Core Ultra 9 285K review.

For a meaningful IPC comparison, the core types must match (P-core to P-core or E-core to E-core), the baseline microarchitecture must be named, and the frequency-normalization method, workloads, and uncertainty must be clear. For a buying decision, also consider the applications you use, power behavior, memory, software, and platform configuration rather than treating IPC as a complete performance score.

In a 2025 status update, Intel said four of five launch issues affecting performance or functionality had been resolved at that time.
