To set up a portable 5G hotspot, confirm that your device and carrier plan support hotspot data, power on and activate the hotspot according to its model guide, then join its Wi-Fi network from each phone, tablet, or computer using the displayed network name and password. The exact SIM, startup, and security steps vary by model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for your device.
Before you start: check service, device, and power
- Confirm carrier and plan support. Check that the carrier supports the hotspot model and that your account includes a suitable hotspot plan. Tethering restrictions or charges can vary; Google warns that some carriers limit or charge for tethering, and Motorola says the plan must support data sharing. See Google’s Android hotspot guidance and Motorola Support.
- Find the exact model guide. SIM size and orientation, activation, button names, and menus are not universal. Use the quick-start guide or support page for the hotspot in hand.
- Prepare power. Charge the hotspot or have compatible charging equipment available. AT&T’s GoLink 5G package, for example, lists a 4,000mAh battery, power adapter, and USB-C cable; this is a model-specific detail, not a general accessory list. Check AT&T’s GoLink device setup page before buying a charger or cable.
Install the SIM and battery if your model requires them
Follow the printed markings and the manual for your own device. As one specific example, AT&T’s GoLink instructions say to remove the back plate, open the SIM cover, insert a NanoSIM with the gold contacts facing down and the notch toward the top right, then close and lock the cover. The battery goes in contacts-first before replacing the back plate. Do not assume another model uses the same SIM format or orientation; see AT&T’s GoLink setup instructions.
Power on the hotspot and let it connect
Use the model’s power-on procedure, then wait for its startup and network connection to complete. For the AT&T GoLink, AT&T says to press and hold Navigation/Power until the AT&T logo appears, then allow time for the device to start and connect to the AT&T network. This describes that model only. Other hotspots may require account activation, an app, or different steps; follow their provider’s instructions. See AT&T’s GoLink device setup page.
Connect a phone, tablet, or computer
- On the hotspot, find its Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password. They may appear on the screen, label, or in the device guide; consult the manual if you cannot locate them.
- On the phone, tablet, or computer you want to connect, open Wi-Fi settings and select the hotspot’s network name.
- Enter the hotspot’s current Wi-Fi password and connect.
- Open a webpage or app to confirm that the client has internet access. If the Wi-Fi connection succeeds but there is no internet, check carrier service and plan eligibility.
Google documents the same name-and-password process for joining an Android phone’s hotspot. For phone tethering on Android, its instructions start in Quick Settings by turning on Hotspot; the available steps can depend on Android version. See Google’s instructions for sharing a mobile connection.

Secure the Wi-Fi network
Keep password protection enabled and use the strongest security mode supported by both the hotspot and the devices joining it. Motorola recommends WPA3 where supported; it notes that older devices may not connect to WPA3 or a WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode, and identifies WPA2 (AES) as a broader-compatibility choice. Avoid an open network. These are Motorola’s recommendations for supported settings, not a claim that every hotspot offers the same options. See Motorola’s hotspot security guidance.
If you see an unfamiliar connected device, change the Wi-Fi password. Some supported Motorola models also provide connection limits or allowed-device controls; menu paths and availability differ by model.

Manage battery and connection quality
Save battery
Hotspot use can drain a battery quickly. Motorola warns, “Using the hotspot really drains the battery!” Actual runtime depends on the device, signal, settings, and use; the cited support guidance does not quantify it. Keep compatible charging equipment available for extended sessions if the device’s instructions allow charging while in use, turn the hotspot off when finished, and enable automatic shutdown when idle if that option is available. Google gives similar general advice for phone tethering. See Motorola Support and Google’s Android guidance.
Check Wi-Fi band settings only if available
If a client cannot find the network or the connection is poor, check the hotspot’s compatibility or band settings. On supported Motorola devices, the guide describes 5GHz as an option to reduce interference and 2GHz as an option for a stronger signal; available bands vary by device and country. These are not universal settings, and the guidance gives no quantified speed or range guarantee. See Motorola’s hotspot guidance.

Troubleshoot in this order
- The hotspot will not power on or reports a SIM problem: Check its screen or status indicators. AT&T’s GoLink displays “No SIM card” when no SIM is present. If the SIM needs reseating, follow that model’s instructions rather than forcing it. See AT&T’s GoLink SIM instructions.
- The hotspot starts but does not connect to the carrier: Check device compatibility, activation, account status, and local service with the provider. Startup and activation procedures vary by hotspot.
- A client cannot join Wi-Fi: Confirm that you selected the correct network name and enter the current password. If the client has an old saved password, forget that network and try again.
- The network name is not visible: Confirm the hotspot is on, then check supported compatibility or band settings. The available settings depend on the model.
- One client fails while others connect: Check whether that client supports the selected Wi-Fi security mode. On supported Motorola devices, WPA2 (AES) may offer broader compatibility than WPA3 or a WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode.
- Clients connect to Wi-Fi but have no internet: Verify carrier service and plan eligibility. Hotspot and tethering rules vary by carrier and account.
Dedicated hotspot or phone hotspot?
A dedicated portable hotspot is a separate device; a phone hotspot shares that phone’s mobile data. Decide based on the devices you need to connect, carrier support and plan terms, battery and charging needs, and the security controls available. Google documents Android phone tethering over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB, with an Android-to-Mac USB limitation; those options are phone guidance and do not define what every dedicated hotspot supports. See Google’s Android tethering instructions.
When choosing dedicated hardware, check carrier and network compatibility, activation and plan rules, supported bands, charging arrangement, Wi-Fi security modes, and client-device compatibility. The setup guidance cited here does not establish a universal SIM or eSIM arrangement, band list, device limit, coverage level, data allowance, or current plan price, so verify those details with the carrier and hotspot maker for your location.
