Sometimes—but “AI” alone tells you nothing about whether a money-management app is safe. The answer depends on what financial information the provider collects, what it sends to other companies or AI services, how long it keeps the information, and how it protects account access and stored data. Check the specific app’s privacy policy, AI terms, and bank-link authorization before connecting an account.

What financial data might an app access?

Linking an account can give a money-management app access to information such as account identifiers, balances, transaction histories, payment history, and purchases. An AI feature may also process what you type into a chat, along with financial details or insights derived from your accounts. The exact fields depend on the app and the authorization you grant.

In the United States, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) Privacy Rule covers nonpublic personal information collected by a financial institution in connection with providing a financial product or service, subject to the rule’s definitions and exceptions. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) notes that this can include account numbers, payment history, balances, and card purchases. Whether a particular money app qualifies as a covered financial institution depends on its activities and other facts; a budgeting feature alone does not settle the question. FTC guide to financial privacy and the Safeguards Rule.

How can an AI money app use the information?

An app may use account data to categorize spending, create budgets, identify patterns, or answer questions about your finances. Those features do not establish whether the provider retains prompts, shares transaction data with service providers, or uses information to develop or improve AI models. Look for specific disclosures covering the different kinds of data, rather than assuming that “AI-powered” means either private or public.

Review the privacy policy, AI-specific terms, and any in-app notices for statements about:

  • Whether account information, chat prompts, generated answers, and derived insights are stored.
  • Whether those data are shared with cloud, analytics, or AI service providers, affiliates, or advertising partners.
  • Whether prompts or financial data are used to train or improve models, and whether you can opt out.
  • How long raw account data, prompts, and derived insights are retained, and what deletion controls are available.
  • What happens to account access and previously collected data when you disconnect a bank account or close the app account.

The FTC says companies must honor their privacy commitments, including those made in policies, terms, and promotional materials. It warns that retaining or using consumer data for a new purpose without clear notice and affirmative express consent can create enforcement risk. Its January 2024 guidance puts the point plainly: “There is no AI exemption from the laws on the books.” This is guidance about companies’ obligations, not proof of what any particular app does. Security and privacy are different questions

Security is about protecting information from unauthorized access, loss, or exposure. Privacy is about what information the company collects, how it uses and shares it, and how long it keeps it. Encryption and multi-factor authentication can help protect data, but they do not tell you whether a provider uses transaction details to train a model or shares data with vendors.

The FTC’s app-security guidance recommends understanding what data an app collects and retains, avoiding unnecessary collection and retention, and protecting data on devices, in transit, and on servers. It also advises considering the security of third-party code. The FTC notes, “There is no checklist for securing all apps,” because the right measures depend on the app and the information it handles. FTC guidance on addressing mobile-app security risk.

For financial institutions covered by the FTC Safeguards Rule, the rule calls for a written information-security program suited to the business and the sensitivity of the information. Measures described by the FTC include encryption, assessing apps used to store or transmit customer information, multi-factor authentication, and secure disposal. Coverage and exemptions matter: these are not universal obligations for every app, and the existence of a control does not guarantee that an app is safe. FTC Safeguards Rule overview.

What to check before linking a bank account

  1. Read the authorization screen. Identify which accounts and data fields the app requests, whether the access is read-only, and whether it requests permission to move money. Do not infer the scope from the app’s description.
  2. Find out how the connection works. Check whether the app connects directly to your bank or through a linking provider, and what data or access may remain after you disconnect. If the details are not clear in the authorization flow or disclosures, ask the provider before linking.
  3. Check AI-specific data terms. Look for separate statements about prompts, account data, generated outputs, and model training or improvement. Do not treat a general promise to protect data as an answer to each of these questions.
  4. Look for retention and deletion controls. Determine whether you can delete prompts, linked-account data, and derived insights, and whether the provider describes different retention periods for each.
  5. Assess account protections. Look for multi-factor authentication, encryption disclosures, account-access controls, and a way to report a suspected incident. These are useful indicators, not a substitute for understanding data use.
  6. Check which privacy rules apply where you live. A provider’s regulatory claims and the rights available to you can depend on its activities and your location. Do not assume every finance app is covered by the same rules.

Do U.S. financial-data rules cover every app?

No single label determines coverage. GLBA and the FTC Safeguards Rule apply to covered institutions based on their activities and other legal requirements. A provider’s marketing as an “AI finance app” does not by itself establish that it is covered, or that all of its data practices are governed in the same way.

What published figures can—and cannot—tell you

A CFPB working paper examined a dataset of 6,458 unique financial institutions. In that dataset, 11% of app-owning financial firms shared data with third parties, and 1% did not encrypt data in transit. These figures describe that paper’s dataset; they are not current prevalence estimates for AI money-management apps and do not show what a particular app does.
