When a game leaves the PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium Game Catalog, you lose access through the subscription—even if you downloaded it. A monthly game you previously added to your library works differently: it remains playable while your membership is active. Buying a removed Catalog game separately can restore access if it is still available for purchase in your region.
What happens when an Extra or Premium Catalog game leaves?
The Catalog is a rotating selection, not a collection of games you own. When a title leaves, its PlayStation Plus access ends. Sony also says access to associated DLC and add-ons ends when the game is removed. There is no general grace period established for continuing to play after the announced removal date.
Removing the game from your console or leaving it installed does not change this entitlement: a download is not ownership. Sony’s PlayStation Plus launch guide says downloaded Extra and Premium Catalog games need to connect to PSN every seven days to validate membership and maintain access. This validation detail is for Catalog downloads; the guide does not state that it applies to monthly downloadable games.
Catalog games and monthly games are different
| How you got the game | After it leaves the Catalog | Membership requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Extra or Premium Game Catalog download | Subscription access ends when the title leaves. Having it installed does not preserve access. | Requires an eligible active membership and continued Catalog availability. |
| Monthly game added to your library | Remains available to play while your membership is active; it is not governed by the Catalog’s removal date. | Requires an active membership. |
| Separately purchased game | Access comes from the purchase rather than the Catalog listing. | PlayStation Plus is not required for the purchased game itself, though online features may have their own requirements. |
Sony’s US PlayStation Plus games FAQ distinguishes monthly games, which you can add to your library and play while subscribed, from Catalog games that may have end dates and be removed.

Will you lose your save data?
Losing subscription access does not necessarily mean losing your saved progress. Sony’s 2022 PlayStation Blog guide says that if you purchase a removed game, you can access its save data again as long as the save has not been deleted. That is not a guarantee that every departing title will remain available for purchase, or that deleted save data can be recovered.
Can buying the game restore access to its DLC?
Buying the base game separately may restore access to the game, but DLC access depends on what you own. Sony says Catalog-associated add-ons become inaccessible when the game leaves. Previously purchased DLC can be used again after you resubscribe or buy the game, provided the relevant game and add-on entitlements are available to your account.

How to check a specific game
- Check how you claimed it. If you added it as a monthly game, it follows the monthly-game rule. If you downloaded it from Extra or Premium’s Game Catalog, it follows the Catalog rule.
- Look for the removal date. Check the game’s current PlayStation Plus listing and any announced end date. Catalog availability and dates can change over time.
- Check your region’s Store listing. If the game is leaving, confirm whether it is separately available to purchase in your region; a purchase option is not guaranteed.
- Check your membership and save status. Monthly games still require an active membership, while a separately purchased game does not rely on Catalog access. Do not delete save data if you expect to return to the game.
Availability, removal dates, and streaming options can differ by region, tier, and title. Sony’s PlayStation Plus support guide covers membership and ways to access or download games; use the listing for your region to confirm an individual title.
