Eidos was an experimental design project, not a confirmed retail product: its mask concept selected sounds to bring forward, while its goggles made selected visual movement more noticeable. The two devices explored separate ways of tuning perception in real time, but the cited accounts do not establish that Eidos became commercially available or clinically validated.
What are the Eidos mask and goggles?
Eidos was a pair of experimental wearable concepts designed to selectively enhance hearing and vision. The project video describes them as “two pieces of experimental equipment” and names designers Tim Bouckley, Millie Clive-Smith, Mi Eun Kim, and Yuta Sugawara. The mask focused on sound; the goggles focused on visual information. They were separate devices, not a single system that improved both senses at once.
Contemporary coverage showed a conspicuous prototype form rather than a discreet everyday wearable. WIRED reported in July 2013 that the team was working toward productizing the technology, but the cited sources do not establish that it reached the market or is available today.
How does the Eidos mask work?
The audio concept used a directional microphone to capture sound, then software to select a desired signal. Playback through earphones and a bone-conduction component was intended to make a chosen voice or sound easier to focus on in a busy soundscape.

For example, the design suggested focusing on a musician or following a conversation amid surrounding noise. These were proposed uses, not results demonstrated in controlled comparative tests. The available accounts do not establish improved hearing or medical effectiveness.
Can Eidos goggles show movement?
The goggles processed a selected visual target and displayed an enhanced view. WIRED described a “ghosted” view of moving objects, similar to seeing traces of motion in a long-exposure photograph, but presented live. Designer Millie Clive-Smith said the effect could reveal movement patterns and details a viewer might not otherwise notice.

How the two Eidos devices differed
| Device | Input and processing | Intended output |
|---|---|---|
| Mask | Directional microphone captures sound; software selects a desired signal. | Selected audio played through earphones and a bone-conduction component. |
| Goggles | Processes a selected visual target. | Enhanced imagery that makes movement traces more apparent. |
Can you buy Eidos?
The cited sources do not establish Eidos as a current product for sale. They describe a design prototype and its intended uses; they do not establish availability, safety for all-day wear, or validated accessibility benefits. Consumer bone-conduction headphones are a related hardware category to explore, but they are not Eidos and do not reproduce its directional microphone, signal-selection software, or complete prototype experience.
