Policies differ between prisons and can change, so a rule from another state—or even another facility—may not apply to your visit.
Check the facility’s rules and your visit status first
Start with the official visitor page for the prison you plan to visit. The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) visiting guidance directs visitors to read the regulations for the specific location and verify its hours. Virginia likewise notes that procedures can vary by institution and change. The BOP advises: “You should be familiar with all visiting rules, regulations, and procedures before your visit.”
Before travelling, verify:
- Whether you must be on an approved visitor list and how to apply.
- Whether you need an appointment and which dates or times are available.
- Visitor limits, check-in instructions, and any temporary suspension or status notice.
- Current identification, clothing, belongings, and screening rules.
Use the institution’s current page or contact the facility if anything is unclear. Michigan, for example, links visitors to facility schedules and quarantine status; a general agency page or an old printout may not reflect a local change.
Bring the type of ID the prison accepts
Carry the original, valid identification listed by the facility, and make sure the name matches your visitor application or registration. Rules for children vary, so check the age threshold and accepted documents rather than assuming a minor does—or does not—need photo ID.

These are examples of local policies, not a nationwide ID standard. Follow the prison’s own list, including its rules for minors.
Choose clothing using the local dress code
A modest, conservative outfit is a sensible starting point, but it does not guarantee entry. Review the prison’s dress code before getting dressed: clothing that passes at one facility may be prohibited at another. The BOP says inappropriate clothing can lead to denied entry and directs visitors to check the specific institution’s policy.

Restrictions to look for
Facility rules may prohibit revealing, sheer, very short, tight, or suggestive clothing; certain tops; high slits; hats or caps; gang or offensive symbols; camouflage; or clothes that resemble inmate attire. The details can be unusually specific:
- Federal BOP facilities: Its general guidance lists items such as halter tops, crop tops, low-cut tops, sheer garments, leotards, spandex, miniskirts, backless tops, sleeveless garments, and skirts two inches or more above the knee among clothing generally not permitted. Check the individual institution’s rules for its application.
- Oregon: The state says not to wear blue denim or blue clothing of any kind. Its guidance also addresses hem length, footwear, undergarments, revealing or sheer clothing, suggestive clothing, and camouflage. It suggests bringing a spare outfit in case your clothing does not meet requirements.
- Missouri: Its policy bars several categories of revealing, tight, excessively baggy, short, slit, damaged, or symbol-bearing clothing. Headwear is restricted except for verified religious purposes.
- Virginia: Attire must cover from the neck to the kneecaps. Its listed restrictions include form-fitting, see-through, and certain short or low-cut clothing, as well as offender-like clothing and inappropriate symbols.
Use the exact local code to check colors, hems, footwear, metal supports, and headwear. Do not rely on a general idea of what counts as “appropriate.”

Take only items the facility expressly permits
Do not assume you can bring a purse, phone, watch, cash, food, medication, photographs, or gifts into the visiting area. Check each item against the prison’s rules and ask the facility ahead of time about medication, mobility aids, medical equipment, religious headwear, infant supplies, or accessibility accommodations. Local exceptions may require particular documentation or check-in arrangements.

- Oregon: Phones and other electronics must be left at home or in a locker. Its guidance describes limited coins, up to five non-Polaroid photographs or five sheets of photos, specified infant supplies, and emergency medication held at the Sergeant’s desk as examples of allowed items. - Missouri: Its listed allowances include coins in a clear bag or pouch for vending, specified medical supplies, and defined infant supplies. Small lockers are available at most institutions, but availability is not universal outside that system. Missouri says visitors, packages, children, and vehicles may be searched and that metal detectors are used at all facilities. See Missouri’s current visiting information for details.
Do not treat another state’s allowances as permission at your facility. If an item is essential and the rules do not clearly address it, contact the prison before you travel.

Use the facility’s stated arrival window; it is not the same everywhere. Virginia tells scheduled visitors to arrive one hour early for screening. Missouri says visitors may arrive in the parking lot no earlier than 30 minutes before visiting begins. These are examples of local procedures, not general arrival times.

Allow time for identity checks and any screening described by the prison. Bring only what you can keep with you or secure as directed, and do not count on a locker unless the facility confirms one is available. Virginia says food and drinks are not allowed and vending is not available at its facilities; check your own institution’s instructions rather than assuming those rules apply elsewhere.
