Use your phone’s hotspot for occasional connectivity if your plan includes enough hotspot data and the battery drain is acceptable. Choose a dedicated portable 5G hotspot for frequent or extended sessions, several devices, or when you want to keep your phone free for calls and other use. A separate hotspot adds hardware and plan costs, and it is not automatically faster: coverage, signal, congestion, device capability, and plan terms affect both options.
How the two hotspot options work
Phone hotspot
Your phone shares its cellular connection over Wi-Fi with other devices. It is convenient because you already carry the hardware, but your phone plan must allow hotspot use and provide enough data for the way you use it. AT&T explains its phone-plan hotspot requirements.
Dedicated portable hotspot
A portable hotspot is separate cellular hardware that connects to a mobile network and shares that connection over Wi-Fi. It needs a compatible service plan of its own; Verizon distinguishes these dedicated devices from a phone’s built-in hotspot feature in its device FAQ and lists plans for hotspot devices.
Which option fits your needs?
| What matters | Phone hotspot | Dedicated portable 5G hotspot |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience | Uses a phone you already carry, provided its plan allows tethering. | Requires a separate device and compatible plan. |
| Phone battery and availability | Hotspot use draws on the phone’s battery and keeps the phone busy serving connected devices. | Uses its own battery, so it does not drain the phone while serving other devices. |
| Data and cost | May draw on an allowance included with your phone plan. Check the high-speed limit and what happens after it. | Adds the cost of hardware and a hotspot plan. Compare the plan’s allowance and post-limit terms with your existing service. |
| Connected devices | Limits depend on the phone and carrier. | Limits vary by model. NETGEAR lists up to 32 connected devices for its Nighthawk M7; that specification does not apply to every hotspot. |
| Speed and reliability | Depend on cellular conditions, phone capability, and plan rules. | Also depend on cellular conditions, device hardware, and plan rules. Dedicated hardware does not guarantee faster service. |
| Travel | Check roaming coverage, plan terms, and phone support at your destination. | Check the exact model’s cellular bands, carrier or eSIM compatibility, destination coverage, and data terms. |
When a phone hotspot is the better choice
Start with your phone when you only need to connect a laptop or tablet occasionally and your plan’s hotspot allowance is sufficient. It avoids buying and provisioning another device. If a session runs long, remember that the phone is doing two jobs: maintaining its cellular connection and serving Wi-Fi to other devices. AT&T advises turning the hotspot off when it is not in use and keeping a portable battery pack available in its tethering guidance.

When a dedicated hotspot is worth considering
A separate device can be a better fit if you rely on mobile internet regularly, connect several devices, or need to preserve your phone’s battery and availability during a long session. Before buying, confirm that the model supports your carrier and the bands it uses, then check its battery and Wi-Fi capacity against your needs. The M7 is one model-specific example: NETGEAR advertises up to 32 connected devices, but that number should not be treated as a general limit for portable hotspots.
Compare plans before you buy
- Check your phone plan. Find out whether it permits hotspot use, how much high-speed hotspot data it includes, and what happens when that allowance is used.
- Check the dedicated device plan. Confirm that the intended carrier supports the device and compare the plan’s data allowance and after-limit conditions with your phone plan.
- Compare total costs. Include the hotspot hardware and its service plan, not just the device price. A dedicated hotspot makes sense only if its separate cost and terms suit your usage.
- Check travel details if relevant. Verify coverage and data terms for each destination rather than assuming a device or plan works everywhere.
What to check for international travel
Confirm the exact hotspot’s cellular bands and compatibility with the carrier or eSIM service you plan to use, as well as destination coverage and data terms. NETGEAR advertises eSIM plans in 140+ countries for its Nighthawk M7; this is a manufacturer claim for that model, not a guarantee of service in every location or a feature shared by all hotspots. Check NETGEAR’s current M7 details and the applicable destination terms before relying on it.

Will a dedicated 5G hotspot be faster?
Not necessarily. Both kinds of hotspot rely on cellular service, so location, signal quality, network congestion, device capabilities, and plan rules can affect the connection. A dedicated hotspot may suit sustained or multi-device use, but that is different from proving that it will deliver higher speeds. T-Mobile’s comparison describes indicative mobile-hotspot speed ranges while noting that performance varies; those ranges are not a promise of the speed you will get at a particular place or time: T-Mobile’s mobile-hotspot comparison.
