In Notebookcheck’s 2025 review, GIGABYTE’s AORUS RTX 5090 AI BOX landed around RTX 4090-class performance in the review’s aggregate rating—but it did not match the same desktop cards in every test. The AI BOX houses a desktop GeForce RTX 5090, yet connects to a laptop externally over Thunderbolt 5, so its benchmark results are not the same as assuming an RTX 5090 is installed inside a desktop PC.
What is the AORUS RTX 5090 AI BOX?
The AORUS RTX 5090 AI BOX is GIGABYTE’s liquid-cooled external graphics solution built around a GeForce RTX 5090. GIGABYTE announced it on August 20, 2025, under model number GV-N5090IXEB-32GD. The company says the box connects over Thunderbolt 5 and supports up to 80 Gbps bidirectional bandwidth and up to 100 W of laptop charging. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.
GIGABYTE lists the product on its AORUS RTX 5090 AI BOX product page and identifies the exact model in its August 20, 2025 launch announcement.
How close is its performance to an RTX 4090?
Notebookcheck’s 2025 performance rating gives the AI BOX 71.1 points, compared with 67.6 for the Palit GeForce RTX 4090 GameRock OC tested in the review and 86.3 for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition. That supports describing the AI BOX as roughly RTX 4090-class in that review’s aggregate comparison. It does not establish that the box will match every RTX 4090, workload, or system.

Individual results show why the comparison needs a qualifier. In Notebookcheck’s 3DMark Time Spy Graphics test at 2560 × 1440, the AI BOX scored 39,797 points, ahead of the tested RTX 4090’s 37,216 but below the RTX 5090 Founders Edition’s 48,663. In Affinity Photo 2, Notebookcheck’s listed AI BOX score was far below the scores for those two cards. The ranking therefore depends on the workload, not just the GPU name.
These figures are from Notebookcheck’s test setup and comparison hardware, not a universal performance ranking. The results describe the AI BOX operating as an external GPU over Thunderbolt 5; they should not be treated as equivalent to installing an RTX 5090 directly in a desktop computer. See the Notebookcheck AORUS RTX 5090 AI BOX review for its benchmark tables and test details.

- 3.8-slot design: massive heatsink and fin array optimized for airflow from the four Axial-tech fans
Does the AI BOX require Thunderbolt 5?
GIGABYTE specifies Thunderbolt 5 for the AI BOX. Before buying, check the exact laptop or host system documentation to confirm it supports the required connection and that the setup meets the product’s requirements. The available product information cited here does not establish compatibility for particular laptop models or say whether a separate Thunderbolt 5 cable is included, so check GIGABYTE’s documentation and the specific retailer listing rather than assuming either.

What to consider before choosing it
- Performance depends on the application: Notebookcheck’s results range from an aggregate rating near its tested RTX 4090 to differing rankings in individual benchmarks.
- The connection is external: This is a Thunderbolt 5 eGPU setup, not an internally installed desktop RTX 5090.
- Charging and bandwidth are manufacturer claims: GIGABYTE specifies up to 80 Gbps bidirectional bandwidth and up to 100 W laptop charging; those figures are not independent performance measurements.
- Verify fit and availability: Confirm host compatibility, box contents, current regional stock, and price with GIGABYTE or the retailer. The sources cited here do not establish current stock or pricing by region.
