If your first pull request gets no response, check the project’s contribution instructions and the PR timeline before following up. There is no universal review deadline: one general guide suggests waiting more than a week, while GitHub Docs says “for weeks.” Follow the repository’s own expectations where they exist, then leave one brief, polite request for feedback in the public PR thread.
Check the project’s process and your PR thread
Start with the repository’s CONTRIBUTING file and any other contribution instructions. Projects may describe how to submit changes or how review works; those instructions take precedence over general etiquette. GitHub’s contribution guidance recommends checking a project’s conventions and requirements.
Then open the pull request and read its timeline. GitHub’s review documentation explains that review conversations appear there, including comments that still need a response. Check whether someone has already commented, asked a question, or otherwise moved the discussion forward before sending a reminder.
How long should you wait?
The general guidance does not establish a standard response time. The Open Source Guide says it is fair to ask for a review after more than a week without a response. GitHub Docs takes a more conservative approach, recommending a polite follow-up if a PR has remained unaddressed for weeks.

These are different broad suggestions, not promised turnaround times. If the project publishes its own review expectations, use those instead. Otherwise, choose a reasonable interval rather than treating a week or any other period as a guarantee.
Send one concise, public follow-up
If the PR still appears unanswered after the applicable waiting period, comment in the existing pull-request thread. The Open Source Guide advises against contacting a maintainer privately; GitHub Docs recommends a polite request and says not to directly mention maintainers’ handles.

For example:
Hi, I’m checking whether this change is ready for review. I’m happy to revise it to fit the project’s conventions. Thanks for your time.
Keep the message brief and courteous. Do not tag or privately message an individual unless the project’s instructions explicitly ask contributors to do so.

If there is still no response
A reminder may also go unanswered. The Open Source Guide notes that this can happen even on an active project. Silence alone does not tell you that the change was rejected, but it also does not guarantee that a review will arrive.
At that point, decide whether to wait longer or put your effort into another contribution. There is no source-backed response-time benchmark that can predict when a particular project will reply.

If feedback arrives
Respond professionally and keep any requested revisions in the existing pull request rather than opening a second PR for the same change. GitHub Docs recommends continuing the discussion and addressing requested changes within that PR.
