Sometimes—but not every time. Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) can automatically look for an applicable fix through Windows Update when Windows 11 repeatedly fails to start. If Microsoft has a matching remediation, the PC can download and apply it, then restart. Microsoft describes QMR as a best-effort feature, so it cannot guarantee a repair for every boot problem.
How Quick Machine Recovery works
- Repeated boot failures lead to recovery. Windows enters the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) after repeated failures to start.
- WinRE connects to the network. Once connected, it checks Windows Update for an available remediation.
- A matching fix is applied. If Windows Update offers a relevant remediation, the device downloads and applies it, then restarts. A successful repair returns the PC to Windows; an unsuccessful attempt may return it to recovery.
- If no fix is found, the next step depends on settings. With the default one-time scan, Windows directs the user to other recovery options. Configured retry intervals can trigger further scans.
The cloud lookup and automatic attempt are separate controls. Cloud remediation determines whether WinRE uses Windows Update; with it off, Microsoft says the device uses local Startup Repair. Auto remediation controls whether the flow runs automatically or requires user intervention.
Who can use it, and is it on by default?
Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 24H2, build 26100.4700 or later, as the feature baseline in its Quick machine recovery documentation. Defaults depend on whether the PC is managed:
- Unmanaged Home and eligible Pro PCs: Cloud remediation is enabled by default when the device is not domain joined or enrolled in enterprise endpoint management.
- Enterprise and Education PCs, and managed Pro PCs: Cloud remediation is disabled by default.
If an administrator explicitly configures the setting, Microsoft says that configuration persists if the device’s management status changes. These feature defaults should not be confused with policy applicability: Microsoft’s Recovery CSP documentation lists separate build requirements for managed policy settings—Windows 11 24H2 build 26100.8737 or later and 25H2 build 26200.8737 or later.

How to check or change the settings
- Open Settings > System > Recovery > Quick machine recovery.
- Review or enable cloud remediation and automatic solution checks. Depending on the available controls, choose a one-time scan or configure retry intervals.
- For a command-line check, open Command Prompt as an administrator and run
reagentc.exe /getrecoverysettings.
To see whether a QMR remediation was applied, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and check Quality updates.
What to expect if the PC still will not start
QMR only helps when Windows Update has a remediation relevant to the failure and the recovery flow can reach the service. If no solution is available, or an attempted repair does not work, use another appropriate recovery option rather than assuming another automatic fix will appear. Microsoft’s Windows device recovery framework treats QMR as one tool for a particular scenario—widespread boot failures—within a broader recovery plan.

Microsoft also documents a QMR test mode, but it is limited to Windows Insider Program devices in the Experimental channel. It is not a general production test for ordinary Windows 11 PCs. Microsoft’s WinRE documentation describes checking network connectivity and update history when testing in the supported environment.

Organizations can configure recovery settings through device policy. Windows Autopatch can also manage QMR update deployment through quality update policies. Microsoft’s Quick machine recovery updates documentation, marked updated September 2, 2026, says new quality update policies default to manual approval; administrators can choose automatic approval or review and approve releases. An approved release can be paused to stop new devices from receiving it, but pausing does not uninstall an update already installed. New pause settings can take up to eight hours to apply.

For IT teams, QMR is a targeted recovery option, not a replacement for planning how to handle individual device failures and broader incidents. Microsoft also describes the feature at a high level in its Windows 11 version 25H2 IT-pro overview.
