iFixit’s July 31, 2014 teardown of the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 (DK2) documents the headset’s external infrared positional tracker, low-persistence display, internal components and repair access. The teardown also gave the beta development kit a preliminary repairability score of 9 out of 10, while noting that opening the tracker can be difficult without a guide.
What changed in the Rift Development Kit 2
DK2 was an evolution of the first Rift development kit, not a consumer Rift model. Its defining tracking change was an external infrared camera designed specifically for DK2. The headset continued to track orientation without the camera, but positional tracking depended on that dedicated tracker.
Oculus VR told iFixit that “it is not possible to substitute an old webcam, nor is it possible to retrofit the tracking to the original Development Kit.” That statement appears in iFixit’s 2014 teardown and concerns the tracker and original development kit; it should not be generalized to later Oculus or Meta devices.
Display and specifications reported in the teardown
The following are specifications presented in iFixit’s 2014 teardown, not fresh measurements or current product specifications.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Feature | DK2 specification reported by iFixit |
|---|---|
| Display | 5.7-inch Super AMOLED, described as low-persistence |
| Resolution | 960 × 1080 pixels per eye |
| Field of view | 100° |
| Motion-sensor update rate | 1000 Hz for the accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer |
| Additional feature | Built-in latency tester |
These figures describe the DK2 development kit as covered by the teardown. They are not a comparison with later Rift hardware or a claim about measured performance in use.
How the tracker and cabling work
The external positional tracker was custom-made to work with DK2. Inside it, iFixit found 40 infrared LEDs mounted on a ribbon cable. The teardown describes the headset electronics as more consolidated than in the earlier kit, with a motherboard bringing together circuitry that had previously been spread across boards and control hardware.

DK2’s cable hub carried USB 2.0, HDMI, optional DC power and a sync connection for the positional tracker. iFixit also identified a Spectra7 VR7100 processor in the HDMI cable and attributed the thinner cable design to that component.
What iFixit identified inside the headset
The teardown identified a number of components on the DK2 motherboard. These are historical component identifications from iFixit’s 2014 inspection, not a current bill of materials.

Repairability: accessible headset, trickier tracker
iFixit assigned DK2 a preliminary repairability score of 9 out of 10, with 10 representing the best score. It called the rating preliminary because DK2 was a beta development product. The teardown’s positives included standard Phillips #0 screws in the headset and tracker, an accessible motherboard and improved cable management. The caveat is practical: accessing the positional tracker is described as tricky without a repair guide.
A Phillips #0 precision screwdriver is relevant to the documented fasteners, but the teardown does not establish that every repair requires one specific tool.

Documented DK2 repair guides
iFixit’s DK2 device page lists guides for replacing the cable hub, camera motherboard, display screen, eye-relief adjustment screw, headset motherboard and lenses. The headset motherboard replacement guide notes static shock, overheating or component failure as possible causes of motherboard failure.
These guides document repair procedures; they do not establish current parts stock, prices or repair success rates. Check the iFixit DK2 repair-help page for the listed repair resources.
