Tejas Mk1A is an indigenous light fighter being built under a signed contract for the Indian Air Force (IAF). MRFA is the IAF’s Multi Role Fighter Aircraft acquisition, for which India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) gave Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for Rafale in February 2026. The key difference is that Mk1A has a disclosed order, price and delivery window; the cited MRFA announcement establishes an approval and an Indian-manufacturing intent, but not a signed supply contract or those procurement details.
At a glance: a contracted aircraft order versus an acquisition approval
| Comparison | Tejas Mk1A | MRFA |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A variant, built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). | The IAF’s Multi Role Fighter Aircraft acquisition; the February 2026 AoN announcement identifies Rafale. |
| Procurement stage | The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a HAL contract on 25 September 2025. | The DAC accorded AoN on 12 February 2026. The cited announcement does not establish a signed contract. |
| Quantity and announced value | 97 aircraft—68 fighters and 29 twin seaters—for over ₹62,370 crore, excluding taxes. | Not stated in the cited MoD AoN announcement. |
| Indian production | Over 64% indigenous content stated for the 2025 order; classified as “Buy (India-IDDM).” | The MoD said the majority of aircraft to be procured would be manufactured in India; a detailed split was not stated. |
| Delivery timing | Deliveries were scheduled to begin in 2027–28 and finish over six years. | Not stated in the cited MoD AoN announcement. |
| Named systems or configuration | The 2025 release names UTTAM Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, Swayam Raksha Kavach and control-surface actuators. | Detailed aircraft configuration was not stated in the cited MoD AoN announcement. |
These are different points in the acquisition process, so the Mk1A contract figures should not be read as a like-for-like comparison with an MRFA approval. The MoD’s September 2025 contract announcement and its February 2026 MRFA announcement are the current official milestones covered here.
What the Tejas Mk1A contract establishes
The September 2025 agreement covers 97 Mk1A aircraft for the IAF, including 68 single-seat fighters and 29 twin seaters, along with associated equipment. The MoD put the cost at over ₹62,370 crore excluding taxes and said deliveries would start in 2027–28 and be completed over six years. These are terms of a signed contract, rather than projections attached only to an approval.
The MoD said the aircraft in this order would have over 64% indigenous content and 67 additional items beyond those in the previous Mk1A contract signed in January 2021. It specifically named the UTTAM AESA radar, Swayam Raksha Kavach and control-surface actuators among the advanced indigenous systems to be integrated. The acquisition is categorized as “Buy (India-IDDM)” under the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020.

The Department of Defence Production describes LCA Tejas as a 4.5-generation, all-weather, multirole fighter. An earlier MoD release on the planned 83-aircraft Mk1A order listed improved avionics, radar, weapons and air-to-air refuelling as intended enhancements. That earlier description is programme history, not a complete specification sheet for every aircraft in the 2025 contract. What the MRFA approval establishes—and what it does not
On 12 February 2026, the DAC accorded AoN for the IAF’s MRFA acquisition and identified Rafale. The MoD said the programme is intended to support air-dominance roles across the spectrum of conflict and long-range offensive strikes, and that the majority of aircraft to be procured would be manufactured in India.

AoN is a procurement approval milestone; it is not, by itself, evidence that a final supply contract has been signed. The cited announcement does not state the number of aircraft, programme price, delivery dates, detailed final manufacturing split or aircraft configuration. Those figures should not be inferred from the Mk1A order or filled in using older reports.
A 114-aircraft requirement appeared in December 2024 newspaper reporting reproduced in a DRDO-hosted clipping compilation. It is historical reporting, not a quantity confirmed by the February 2026 MoD AoN announcement. DRDO-hosted clipping compilation, 24 December 2024

MRFA is not the Navy’s Rafale-Marine purchase
India’s separate agreement with France for 26 carrier-capable Rafale aircraft is for the Indian Navy, not the IAF’s MRFA acquisition. Signed on 28 April 2025, that agreement covers aircraft as well as training, simulators, weapons and support. The two Rafale-related procurements have different services and should not be combined when discussing MRFA. MoD announcement on the Rafale-Marine agreement
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the Indian-production figures
The Mk1A announcement gives an indigenous-content figure: over 64% for the 2025 order. For MRFA, the MoD says the majority of aircraft to be procured will be manufactured in India, without providing a detailed split in the cited release. Those statements describe different measures; they do not establish comparable percentages or identical definitions of Indian production.
