On iPhone, turn on Driving Focus in Settings > Focus. On supported Android phones, Google’s documented route is Settings > Modes > Driving > Set up Driving. Both let you limit interruptions, but the names, activation options, and notification controls differ.
Set up Driving Focus on iPhone
- Open Settings and tap Focus.
- Tap Driving. If it is not listed, tap the add button and choose Driving.
- Set which notifications are allowed. To choose when the feature starts, tap While Driving under Turn on Automatically.
- Choose an activation method: Automatically for motion detection, When Connected to Car Bluetooth, Manually, or Activate With CarPlay. The exact options depend on your setup. Apple’s Driving Focus instructions describe these settings.
To turn it on manually after setup, open Control Centre, touch and hold Focus, then tap Driving. You can also configure an optional Auto-Reply for selected contact groups and customize the reply text. Apple says Driving Focus is available with iOS 15 and later; it silences or limits texts and other notifications. Incoming calls are allowed only when iPhone is connected to CarPlay, a car’s Bluetooth system, or a hands-free accessory. You can also allow apps to see that notifications are silenced. Set up Driving mode on Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap Modes, then Driving, then Set up Driving.
- Under When to turn on automatically, tap While driving.
- Review Notification filters and choose which interruptions to allow or block.
Once configured, modes can be turned on or off from Quick Settings: swipe down from the top of the screen and select the mode. Google’s Android instructions describe filters for people—including calls, messages, and conversations—apps, alarms, media, reminders, calendar events, and other interruptions. What gets through depends on your filters and device settings.
Android labels and availability vary by phone and software version. Google notes that some steps in its general Android guide apply only to Android 14 and later. Its separate Pixel instructions use the same setup route and say some steps require Android 11 or later on Pixel phones. If the menu is different or missing, search Settings for “Driving” or consult your phone maker’s current instructions; the Pixel route is not universal for Android.

The modes are related, but their call handling is not identical. Apple documents its call allowance in connection with CarPlay, car Bluetooth, or a hands-free accessory; Android’s guidance points users to configurable filters and device-specific settings. Check your chosen filters rather than assuming every call or alert will be blocked.

Silencing notifications can reduce interruptions, but it does not make phone use safe or override local driving rules. Apple’s iPhone User Guide warns: “The Driving Focus is not a substitute for following all the rules that prohibit distracted driving.” Set the mode before you begin driving, and do not interact with the phone on the road.
