You can test most Android 16 behavior changes before changing your app’s targetSdkVersion. Install the app on an Android 16 emulator or Pixel device, first test changes that affect all apps, then selectively force-enable target-gated changes through Android’s compatibility framework. This isolates regressions without prematurely retargeting your app.
Set up an Android 16 test runtime
Android’s setup guidance supports testing on either a Pixel device or an emulator. Install Android Studio and the Android 16 SDK, then create or configure an Android 16 (API 36) runtime. A physical device is optional; an emulator is a documented way to begin. See the Android 16 setup overview.
| Option | Useful for | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Android emulator | Controlled, repeatable testing and trying different window sizes or device configurations. | Use the configurations relevant to your app; an emulator does not replace testing hardware-specific or real-device behavior. |
| Physical Pixel device | Checking behavior on actual device hardware. | Android names a Google Pixel device as an option, but no particular model is established as required here. Confirm Android 16 support for a device before using it. |
For setup details, follow Android’s Android 16 guidance. Choose the emulator for controlled iteration, and add physical hardware when device-specific behavior matters.
Test in this order
- Run your app’s normal flows first. On Android 16, exercise launch, sign-in, navigation, notifications, background work, media, and the app’s main task before changing any compatibility settings. Record the runtime and configuration, app build, steps to reproduce, and relevant logs when something fails.
- Check changes that affect all apps. These apply because the app is running on Android 16, regardless of its target SDK. Test them before target-gated changes; platform-wide changes cannot be toggled off on public release builds.
- Isolate target-gated changes. Use Developer options or
adbto force-enable a specific compatibility change, leaving unrelated changes off. Repeat the same flow with the change off and on, and record its ID and state. - Retest with an API 36-targeting build. Compatibility toggles help isolate causes, but do not substitute for building and testing a candidate that actually targets API 36. Run your regression suite on Android 16, supported older Android versions, and the device and window configurations your app supports.
Android’s behavior-change guidance distinguishes changes that affect all apps from those activated by targeting Android 16. Its Android 16 overview describes using behavior-change toggles and integrated logging to test without changing the target.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Prioritize the Android 16 changes most likely to expose regressions
Edge-to-edge and system insets
For apps targeting API 36 on Android 16, the previous opt-out from edge-to-edge is disabled. Inspect screens where content meets system bars, including status and navigation bar contrast, gesture areas, the on-screen keyboard (IME), dialogs, and bottom sheets. Check that important controls remain visible and usable when insets change. See Android 16 behavior changes.
Predictive back navigation
On Android 16, system back animations are enabled by default for apps targeting API 36 or higher. Legacy handling through onBackPressed and KEYCODE_BACK no longer works as before. Test back-to-home, cross-activity, and cross-task navigation, and migrate custom back interception to supported APIs. See Android 16 behavior changes.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Large screens, resizing, and activity state
On displays with a smallest width of at least 600 dp, Android 16 ignores orientation, aspect-ratio, and resizability restrictions for apps targeting API 36, subject to documented exceptions. Rotate the device, resize the app, enter split-screen, and expand the window. Look for portrait-only assumptions, controls pushed off-screen, and lost state when an activity is recreated. The compatibility change UNIVERSAL_RESIZABLE_BY_DEFAULT is listed as enabled by default for apps targeting Android 16 or higher; check the current API 36 compatibility-framework reference when building a test plan.
Fixed-rate scheduled tasks
For apps targeting API 36, after missed scheduleAtFixedRate runs, at most one missed execution runs immediately when the app returns to a valid lifecycle. Review code that assumes every missed interval will be replayed in a burst, and test what happens to subsequent work. The compatibility change ID is STPE_SKIP_MULTIPLE_MISSED_PERIODIC_TASKS; Android lists it as enabled by default for apps targeting Android 16 or higher. Confirm its current status and details in the compatibility-framework reference.

JobScheduler quotas
This change affects all apps on Android 16. Regular and expedited job execution quotas vary with the app standby bucket, whether execution starts while the app is in a top state, and foreground-service status. Test deferred work, retries, and jobs that start while the app is visible but continue after it becomes invisible. See Android 16 changes affecting all apps.
Native code and 16 KB page sizes
Android 16 provides compatibility mode for some apps built for 4 KB pages. If your app includes native libraries, test it in a relevant 16 KB page-size environment. Compatibility mode is a bridge; Android recommends aligning with 16 KB pages for performance, reliability, and stability. See Android 16 changes affecting all apps.

Use compatibility toggles without changing the target SDK
Android’s compatibility framework is designed to let you exercise selected target-gated changes before changing targetSdkVersion. Enable a focused set, compare the same app flow with each change enabled and disabled, and use logs to connect symptoms to a change. Avoid enabling many unrelated changes at once: that makes a regression harder to attribute.
The API 36 reference lists STPE_SKIP_MULTIPLE_MISSED_PERIODIC_TASKS (288912692) and UNIVERSAL_RESIZABLE_BY_DEFAULT (357141415) as enabled by default for apps targeting Android 16 or higher. Change lists can be updated, so verify IDs and status in the current compatibility-framework reference rather than treating a remembered list as permanent.

Toggle-based runs do not cover everything: changes that apply to all apps are already active on Android 16, and Android says they cannot be toggled off on public release builds. Keep a test matrix covering Android 16 and supported older versions, plus phone and large-screen layouts relevant to your product.
Keep a useful regression record
For each test, record the Android version and configuration, app build, user flow, compatibility change ID and toggle state (if applicable), expected result, observed result, and logs. This makes it easier to distinguish an all-app Android 16 regression from one caused by a particular target-gated change, and to reproduce the issue later against the API 36-targeting candidate.
