ASUS’s confirmed BTF 50-series graphics card is the ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 BTF. Its detachable GC-HPWR adapter lets you choose between a hidden-cable installation with a compatible BTF motherboard and a conventional installation using the card’s 16-pin power connector. You do not need a BTF motherboard to use the card.

What is an ASUS BTF graphics card?

BTF means “Back to the Future,” ASUS’s name for a design that moves motherboard connections to the back of the board to reduce visible cables. In the BTF 2.0 motherboard design, a GC-HPWR slot can carry power to a compatible graphics card. The ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 BTF is a BTF 2.5 card: it has a detachable GC-HPWR gold-finger adapter as well as a standard 16-pin power connector. ASUS presents it as its first BTF graphics card based on NVIDIA’s 50 Series. ASUS BTF overview · ROG Astral RTX 5090 BTF announcement

That distinction matters: the card supports hidden power cabling, but it is not limited to it. The official product information establishes this named Astral model; it does not establish a broader initial BTF RTX 50 lineup.

Do you need a BTF motherboard for the RTX 5090 BTF?

No. ASUS documents two installation paths. A conventional motherboard uses the card’s own 16-pin power connector. A compatible BTF motherboard, such as the ROG CROSSHAIR X870E HERO BTF named by ASUS, can instead feed power through its GC-HPWR slot and keep the GPU power cable out of view. ASUS says the motherboard GC-HPWR interface can deliver up to 600 W. ASUS installation and power guidance

Installation path Motherboard requirement Power connection Practical result
Conventional Standard motherboard with a PCIe slot Connect the PSU’s 16-pin cable to the graphics card; remove the detachable GC-HPWR adapter first Works without a BTF motherboard; the GPU power cable remains visible
Hidden BTF route Compatible BTF motherboard with a GC-HPWR slot Fit the card’s GC-HPWR gold finger into the motherboard slot and connect the PSU’s 16-pin cable to the motherboard-side connector Routes GPU power behind the motherboard; ASUS rates the interface for up to 600 W

How to install it with a standard motherboard

  1. Remove the card’s detachable GC-HPWR adapter, following the card manual.
  2. Install the graphics card in the motherboard’s PCIe slot.
  3. Connect the PSU’s 16-pin power cable to the card’s 16-pin connector.

In this configuration, the motherboard does not need a GC-HPWR slot. Use the exact card and power-supply instructions for cable seating and routing.

How hidden GC-HPWR power works

With a compatible BTF motherboard, the card’s GC-HPWR gold finger connects to the board’s GC-HPWR slot. The PSU’s 16-pin cable then connects to the motherboard-side power connector rather than the GPU. For a standard BTF 2.5 card in this up-to-600 W configuration, ASUS says a separate GPU-side 16-pin connection is not needed.

Do not power both the motherboard-side and GPU-side 16-pin inputs on a standard BTF 2.5 card. ASUS’s guidance is to use the connection appropriate to the setup; follow the current manuals for the exact card and motherboard.

What the 600 W and 800 W figures mean

The up-to-600 W figure describes the capacity ASUS gives for the motherboard GC-HPWR interface, not a claim that every compatible card draws 600 W. ASUS identifies a separate exception: the ROG Matrix RTX 5090 30th Anniversary Edition and ROG Astral RTX 5090 Edition 20 can support an up-to-800 W configuration using both motherboard-side and graphics-card-side 16-pin connections. That exception does not apply to the standard ROG Astral RTX 5090 BTF. Check model-specific documentation rather than transferring the wiring instructions between cards. What to check before choosing a build

  • Motherboard: For hidden cabling, confirm that the exact board has a GC-HPWR slot and is supported for the card. A regular PCIe motherboard is sufficient for the conventional installation.
  • Power supply: Use a PSU and 16-pin 12V-2×6 cable compatible with the selected card and the chosen connection path.
  • Card model: Verify whether the card is the standard Astral RTX 5090 BTF or one of the specifically named 800 W models; their connection instructions differ.
  • Manuals: Check the latest ASUS card and motherboard manuals before powering on, particularly if combining BTF components.

ASUS’s official sources establish the product and its two installation paths, but do not establish a precise original launch date, current regional price or stock, or independent benchmark results. Availability and support details may vary by country and change over time.
