What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For fast USB file transfers, choose a cable that explicitly lists a data rate supported by both the computer or host and the connected device, and make sure its ends match their ports. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee a fast data connection: USB-C describes the connector, not the cable’s data speed.
USB cable speeds at a glance
USB-IF’s January 2024 consumer guidance identifies these data-rate labels. They describe signaling rates, not guaranteed file-copy speeds.
| Data-rate label | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| USB 5Gbps | The stated USB signaling-rate tier is 5Gbps. |
| USB 10Gbps | The stated USB signaling-rate tier is 10Gbps. |
| USB 20Gbps | The stated USB signaling-rate tier is 20Gbps. |
| USB 40Gbps | The stated USB signaling-rate tier is 40Gbps. |
| USB 80Gbps | The stated USB signaling-rate tier is 80Gbps. |
USB-IF’s current USB 3.2 overview lists 5Gbps, 10Gbps, and 20Gbps options. Its USB4 guidance describes up to 80Gbps operation with 80Gbps-certified cables. The label is a useful comparison, but actual throughput depends on the host, cable, device, and workload; it cannot by itself predict how long a particular file copy will take. USB-IF USB4 and USB-IF USB 3.2.
Does USB-C mean fast data transfer?
No. USB-IF says, “USB Type-C® is a type of connector.” A USB-C-to-USB-C cable may support a range of capabilities; the connector shape does not establish that it supports USB 3.2 or USB4. USB-IF’s Type-C guidance also notes that a USB 2.0 Type-C implementation supports up to 480Mbps. USB Type-C® and USB 2.0 Type-C™ Cable and Connector: Language Usage Guidelines.
#1 Best Overall

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
USB-IF recommends consumer-facing data-rate names such as USB 5Gbps and USB 10Gbps. Terms including USB4 Version 2.0, USB4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2, SuperSpeed Plus, Enhanced SuperSpeed, and SuperSpeed+ are specification terms, not its recommended consumer-facing product names. When shopping, look for an explicit rate rather than relying on a connector name or older terminology. USB-IF USB data-performance guidance.
How to choose the right cable
- Check the ports and data rates on both devices. Look up the computer or host port and the connected device in their documentation. A cable cannot make a USB 2.0 device transfer at 40Gbps. USB connections use the capabilities available to the connected equipment; USB4, for example, scales to the best mutual capability of host, cable, and device.
- Pick a rate both devices support. Choose the lowest cable tier that meets the job and is compatible with the host and device. A higher advertised rate is only useful when the rest of the connection supports it.
- Match both connector ends. Confirm the connector required at each end. A listing that says USB-C tells you about the connector, not the data rate carried by the cable.
- Check data and charging separately. A 60W or 240W marking describes a power capability, not a data rate. For fast transfer, find the cable’s separate data-rate specification. USB-IF’s compliant USB-C-to-USB-C cable guidance calls for power capability markings and, except for USB 2.0 High-Speed cables, data-rate markings as well. USB-IF Cables and Connectors.
- Look for clear specifications and verify certification when useful. Prefer a listing that states its data rate rather than one that only says “fast” or “USB-C.” USB-IF’s public certified-product search can help verify products certified to bear its logo; it defaults to products certified within the last two years, so inspect the current listing details. Certification does not give the connected devices capabilities they do not have. USB-IF certified product search.
Why is a USB transfer slower than expected?
A cable’s advertised maximum is not a promise of a particular file-copy speed. If transfers seem slow, check the whole connection rather than replacing the cable based on its connector shape alone.

- One component supports a lower rate. The host, cable, or device may set the practical limit. Check their documented data rates and port capabilities.
- The cable’s data rate is unclear or lower than expected. A USB-C plug or high-wattage charging mark does not prove a high data rate. Check the separate rate specification.
- The workload or equipment limits throughput. Signaling-rate labels are not measured file-transfer results. The drive, host, connected devices, and type of data all affect real throughput; USB-IF’s rate guidance does not establish a transfer time for a particular setup.
