Steam Deck uses Proton to run many Windows games on SteamOS, but compatibility depends on the individual game and its components. A crash tells you what happened, not which layer caused it. Start with reversible software checks, then test a different Proton version for that game only if needed.

How Proton works on Steam Deck

Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which is based on Linux. Proton is Valve’s Steam Client compatibility tool for running Windows-exclusive games on Linux. It uses Wine and additional components, including graphics API implementations, to provide compatibility behavior a Windows game may expect. This lets many games run without a native Linux version, but it does not make every game or its supporting software compatible.

Valve describes Proton in its Proton repository as a tool that allows Windows-exclusive games to run on Linux. Valve’s Steamworks documentation also notes that developers may need to account for middleware and anti-cheat compatibility. Proton is not a virtual machine, and games do not all follow identical execution paths.

Why does my Steam Deck keep crashing in games?

A crash tells you what happened, not which layer caused it. Without details about the game and symptoms, there is no single cause to identify. Areas to investigate include the game’s Proton compatibility, middleware or anti-cheat, a recent game update, SteamOS or Steam Client software, third-party applications, and graphics settings. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of any particular title.

  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E

  • Carrying case with removable liner

First distinguish a crash limited to one game from instability across the device. If several games or the whole Deck are affected, prioritize system updates and a restart, and temporarily exit applications installed or running through Desktop Mode. If only one title is affected, check that title’s compatibility details and use the per-game Proton test below.

What does Steam Deck Verified mean?

Valve’s compatibility labels describe its assessment of how a game works on Deck; they are not a general performance score or a promise that the game will never crash. The four categories mean:

Rank #2
VALVE Steam Deck OLED 512GB SSD + 16GB RAM (International Version) - 7.4"" inch, 90Hz, 1280 x 800px, SteamOS 3.0, Handheld Gaming Console, Black
  • International (UK) Version
  • 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)
  • SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
  • 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
  • 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
  • Verified: Works great on Deck by default, without extra modification.
  • Playable: Works, but may require user configuration, such as changing controls or using a mouse or touchscreen to navigate a launcher.
  • Unsupported: Valve currently does not consider the game playable on Deck.
  • Unknown: Valve has not tested the game and has no compatibility information.

For a Playable or Unsupported game, the Store page’s Deck Compatibility section lists requirements that are not met. Compatibility information can change as games, SteamOS, and the Deck evolve, so use the current Store page rather than treating a label as a guarantee. Valve explains the categories in its Steam Deck compatibility information.

How to troubleshoot a Steam Deck game crash

Work through these checks in order. Retest after each change so you can tell whether it made a difference.

  1. Install updates and restart. Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install available updates, and restart the Deck.
  2. Temporarily remove third-party applications from the test. Exit or disable applications installed through Desktop Mode, then try the game again.
  3. Check the game’s compatibility details. Review its Verified category and any unmet requirements in the Store page’s Deck Compatibility section. Unknown means Valve has not tested it; it does not mean the game is confirmed broken.
  4. Try a Proton version for this game only. In the Library, highlight the game and open Menu > Properties > Compatibility. Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try the latest Proton version offered by Steam. Valve notes that forcing this option may cause Steam to download the Windows version if only the Linux build is installed.
  5. Retest, then undo the change if it does not help. Compare the same symptom with the game’s default setting and the forced Proton setting. If there is no improvement, restore the default or look for current, title-specific compatibility information before changing more settings. A Proton version change is a reversible experiment, not a guaranteed fix.
  6. Reduce graphics settings. If the game launches but crashes or becomes unstable during play, try a lower graphics preset or adjust individual graphics settings.
  7. Contact support if the problem persists. Use the Steam Deck support route or the bug-reporting channels in Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide. Steam Support also suggests that users with persistent instability after updates and a restart may opt into the Steam Deck Beta to see whether Valve has shipped a relevant change; beta enrollment is not a guaranteed fix.

Should I force a different Proton version?

It is reasonable to test the latest Valve-provided Proton version when one game is crashing, but do it through that game’s Compatibility settings rather than changing settings globally. Keep the test controlled: note the symptom, change only the compatibility tool, and retry the same part of the game. If behavior worsens or stays the same, switch back to the default.

There is no universally best Proton release for every title, and the available guidance does not establish which version fixes an unnamed game. Start with the versions Steam provides; do not assume a community Proton fork is necessary. A crash alone also does not establish that anti-cheat is responsible: support for middleware varies, and the game and mode matter.

When a game crash may point beyond Proton

If the same game keeps failing after the basic checks, the issue may be specific to that title, a recent game change, or one of its dependencies. If multiple games or system functions are unstable, focus instead on system-wide software and applications. These symptoms can help direct troubleshooting, but they do not identify a cause on their own.

For a useful support report, include the game name, whether it crashes at launch or during play, what happens immediately before the crash, and the SteamOS and Proton versions in use. Avoid starting with a factory reset, SteamOS re-image, hardware disassembly, or replacement parts for a single-game crash; the first-line guidance is software-based and does not establish those steps as a general Proton fix.
