A dice-based roguelike is defined by how it uses dice to create or manage chance; a traditional roguelike is defined by a cluster of structural conventions, such as turn-based play, procedural worlds, grid movement, and permadeath. These labels describe different things, so a game can be both. Dice alone do not make a game traditional—or disqualify it from being traditional.

Dice-based describes a mechanic; traditional describes a structure

Dice can determine an attack, choose an action, serve as equipment, or give players a way to influence what happens next. “Dice-based” tells you that dice play a meaningful role in the game’s chance or decision-making.

“Traditional roguelike” usually refers to a broader pattern of play. Kyzrati of Grid Sage Games lists procedural content, permadeath, grid-based play, turn-based actions, and one player-character among the features associated with a strict interpretation. Cogmind’s FAQ offers a shorter summary: “Everyone has their own definition, but ‘traditional’ roguelikes can be summed up as turn-based tactical/strategy games that take place in a procedurally generated world and feature permadeath.” (Grid Sage Games’ explanation of traditional roguelikes; Cogmind FAQ)

There is no formal industry authority that settles the label. Kyzrati notes, “Giving ‘roguelike’ a definition to satisfy everyone is an impossible task.” Treat “traditional” as a useful description, and state which features you mean when precision matters.

Compare a game on two separate axes

Rather than placing every game on a single scale from “traditional” to “not traditional,” look at its structure and its use of dice independently.

Axis What to check What it tells you
Core structure Turn-based or real-time play; grid-based or continuous movement; procedural content; permadeath and run resets; one primary character or multiple units How closely the game fits a strict traditional-roguelike description
Role of dice Whether dice passively determine outcomes, can be rerolled or controlled, select actions, form part of a build, or reveal and let the player influence enemy actions How chance enters play and what decisions the dice create
Agency and risk How much the player can predict probabilities, mitigate poor rolls, or adapt a plan after a result Whether dice mostly impose uncertainty or also give the player tools to manage it

These distinctions also prevent a common mix-up: dice randomness affects outcomes or choices, while procedural generation creates game content such as a world or its layout. A game can use either, both, or neither; dice do not automatically mean that levels are procedurally generated.

Mini Rogue – A Board Game by Ares Games 1-2 Players – Board Games for Family 30+ Minutes of Gameplay – Games for Family Game Night – for Kids and Adults Ages 12+ - English Version
  • Mini Rogue is a game profoundly inspired by roguelikes and roleplaying games. Monsters, hazards, treasures, bosses, dungeons, as well as random rooms and encounters are all featured in this new and revised version of Mini Rogue.
  • You play as an adventurer delving into a dungeon, room after room, floor after floor, area after area, level after level, to find the Og’s Blood, rumored to be a fabled and mysterious ruby gemstone.
  • Each area of the dungeon is laid out as a branching path of rooms. Each time you face two rooms, you will have to choose and explore one. You will resolve each encounter by rolling dice and managing resources to complete your adventure.
  • In each room, you may encounter a monster, find a treasure, discover a resting area, meet a merchant, dodge traps, or face many other surprising events. Each level ends with a powerful Boss monster which you will have to defeat to continue onto to the next level. You win the game by reaching the last room of the Dungeon and defeating the final Boss Monster, thus collecting the Og’s Blood.
  • 30 minutes of gameplay for 1 to 2 players, ages 12 and above.

What dice can add to roguelike play

Dice make chance tangible: a player can see a roll or a set of possible outcomes and plan around them. But visibility does not eliminate risk. A run of poor rolls can still be frustrating, especially if the player has little control over the result.

Dicefolk illustrates how a designer can turn that tension into a tactical choice. In an interview with Nintendo Life, co-designer Gregory Parisi said the team initially used dice to add randomness. After seeing that players lacked control, the developers let players choose enemy actions, adding a puzzle-like planning layer. Parisi described the aim this way: “With randomness, you can throw a wrench at them and they have to rethink their plan.” This is the developers’ account of Dicefolk’s design, not a rule for every dice-based game. The same interview describes run-specific combinations of creatures, equipment effects, and synergies. Those combinations help vary a run; they are not the same thing as dice rolls, procedural generation, or permadeath. The example shows that a game can use dice both to introduce uncertainty and to give players ways to plan around it.

Does using dice make a game less traditional?

No. Dice are a mechanic, not a test of whether a game belongs to the traditional-roguelike family. A dice-focused game may also have turn-based, grid-based play, procedural worlds, permadeath, and a single primary character. Conversely, a game can use dice without sharing that structural bundle.

Atlas Games Dice Miner
  • Board games; dice games

Nor does “traditional” simply mean old. Kyzrati’s account allows for new games to remain within the traditional sphere while innovating. Visual style is not a reliable shortcut either: ASCII graphics are not a requirement established by the structural criteria above, and the sources describe visual abstraction as variable.

How to describe a game accurately

When a label feels ambiguous, name the features instead of relying on the label alone. For example: “It is a turn-based, grid-based roguelike with permadeath and dice-driven combat.” That tells readers both how the game is structured and what the dice do, without implying that every player uses the same definition of “traditional.”
