Possibly, depending on the Windows Vista installation media: the available Microsoft guide does not confirm a universal way to skip key entry across Vista editions and discs. Even if your setup lets you continue without entering a key, that does not activate Windows or prove you have a license. Microsoft’s Vista guide says activation is required within 30 days after installation.
Can Windows Vista setup continue without a product key?
The exact no-key screens can depend on the Vista edition and installation media. Microsoft’s historical Windows Vista setup guide explains that product keys are part of installing and unlocking the software, but it does not document a universal key-skipping sequence for every edition or disc.
If your setup media offers a way to proceed without entering a key, that only means setup can continue under those circumstances. It is not evidence that Windows is activated or that you are entitled to use that copy. Use a valid key for the Vista edition you are licensed to use.
Skipping key entry is not activation
Entering a key during setup and activating Windows are related but distinct steps. Microsoft’s Vista guide states, “You must activate Windows Vista within 30 days after installation.” That is the historical deadline given in the guide; it does not establish that Microsoft’s activation services still work today.

Do not assume that a key for one Vista edition will activate another. The key, installed edition, and license need to match.
Why instructions for current Windows do not establish the Vista steps
Microsoft’s current Windows activation instructions describe modern Windows interfaces. They do not verify that Vista setup has the same “I don’t have a product key” option or screen sequence, so follow them only for the versions they cover.

What to check before installing
- Identify the Vista edition and the source of the installation media. Retail, OEM, volume-license, or customized media may behave differently; the available Microsoft guide does not establish that they all offer the same key-skipping option.
- Have a valid key for the edition you are entitled to install. Continuing setup without entering one does not replace a license.
- Plan for activation after installation. Microsoft’s Vista guide gives a 30-day window, but present-day activation service availability has not been verified.
If Vista asks you to activate
Microsoft Support’s general online and offline activation guidance includes Vista and describes an offline process using an Installation ID and Confirmation ID. That documentation does not confirm that the relevant activation channels are currently available for Vista. If activation cannot be completed, consult Microsoft’s current support options; do not treat a successful installation as proof of activation.
