Start by reducing camera movement: turn off or lower camera shake, head bob, motion blur, and weapon sway, then adjust turning speed and field of view (FOV) in small steps. Settings vary by game, and none is a guaranteed fix. If you continue to feel unwell, stop playing rather than pushing through.

Which settings should you change first?

Pause the game and check its camera, video, or accessibility settings. If there is a motion-sickness preset or camera-comfort section, try it first. Otherwise, change one setting at a time and briefly check whether it feels more comfortable.

  1. Reduce camera shake and head bob. These effects move the view as your character moves. Turn them off or lower them if the game offers controls.
  2. Disable motion blur and reduce weapon or arm sway. Also look for repeated full-screen effects or other camera movement. The available options and their labels differ by game.
  3. Lower camera rotation speed or sensitivity. Try this if quick turns are uncomfortable; make small adjustments until turning feels manageable.
  4. Try camera smoothing or adjust automatic camera movement. Some games let you enable smoothing or control camera centering. Test the available options rather than assuming one setting is best for everyone.
  5. Try another viewpoint. If the game supports third-person play, switch to it and see whether it feels more comfortable.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 describes adjustable field of view, motion effects, and camera movement as options that can benefit players susceptible to motion sickness. It offers guidance for game developers, not a universal settings recipe for every title.

How should you adjust field of view?

Field of view (FOV) controls how much of the game world is visible. A wider view shows more of the scene, but objects near the edges may look stretched or distorted—the “fishbowl” effect. A narrower view reduces that edge distortion but shows less of the scene. Viewing distance and other factors affect comfort, so there is no universally best FOV.

Increase or decrease FOV in small increments and keep the direction that feels better. Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls Online support guidance explicitly suggests trying either an increase or a decrease.

Where can you find these options?

Look in the game’s camera, video, or accessibility menus; a settings search can help if the game provides one. Check the current support instructions for your game and platform, since menus and available controls differ. These official examples show what to look for, but their labels do not apply to every fantasy game.
