When choosing a college in Sacramento, compare the program and major you can enter, your likely net cost, your route to a degree, and whether the commute, housing, work schedule, and support fit your life. Sacramento State and the Los Rios community colleges are local public options; UC Davis, in nearby Davis, may also suit students willing to consider the wider region. This is a practical starting list, not a complete directory or a universal ranking.

Start with the program and the route to your credential

Decide what you want to study

Identify a likely major, career direction, or credential before comparing campuses. If you are undecided, look at how each option supports exploration and career planning. Los Rios Community College District describes career-center assistance for students considering degree and career choices: Los Rios Community College District.

Check admission requirements for the exact major, not only the institution. UC Davis notes that popular majors may require additional coursework and GPA, and that selection considers academic preparation and available space in the chosen program. A transfer pathway or university admission does not by itself establish admission to every major: UC Davis transfer requirements.

Choose a first-year, credential, or transfer route

Sacramento State is a four-year public university in Sacramento. Its local admission area includes American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake, Sacramento City, and other colleges. The Los Rios district comprises those four named community colleges and provides degree, certificate, financial-aid, counseling, and transfer-planning resources: Sacramento State transfer admissions and Los Rios colleges and services.

Starting at a community college can be a planned way to pursue a two-year credential or prepare to transfer, but it works best when you choose a destination and major early. Los Rios recommends working with a counselor and creating a written education plan. Course requirements and transferability vary by destination, so do not assume that completing a general set of courses will satisfy a particular university or major.

Sacramento State’s Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) guidance describes a route from a California community college to a saved place at a participating four-year university. Students need an approved associate degree, must apply to the corresponding major, report the ADT, and meet applicable deadlines. The route should not be treated as a guarantee of the student’s preferred major or a waiver of its requirements: Sacramento State ADT guidance.

Plan transfer courses against the destination

If transfer is part of your plan, identify the receiving university and intended major before choosing community-college classes. Use official articulation information course by course, then confirm the major’s admission rules and deadlines with the destination.

  1. Choose the destination and major. If you are considering UC Davis, review its transfer requirements and major-specific preparation before enrolling in courses.
  2. Check articulation in ASSIST. Select the community college, receiving university, and relevant major or agreement. ASSIST is California’s official public-college articulation database; a course that transfers may not necessarily fulfill the requirement you need: ASSIST.
  3. Use advising and planning tools. Los Rios recommends counseling and a written education plan. For UC Davis transfer planning, resources include UC TAP, TAG, and Transfer Opportunity Program advising at select community colleges. Eligibility and requirements depend on the specific route and major: UC Davis transfer resources.
  4. Recheck before each term. Confirm course availability, articulation, major prerequisites, and application deadlines with the institutions. Do not rely on an old plan if requirements or course offerings have changed.

Compare the total cost you are likely to pay

Tuition alone is not a useful comparison. Build a budget for each option that includes fees, books, housing, meals, transportation, health insurance where applicable, and the financial aid you are likely to receive. The CSU says costs vary with factors including residency and living arrangement; use the current cost-of-attendance and aid information for the relevant campus and enrollment year: CSU cost of attendance.

Use comparable living arrangements

For California residents first enrolling in 2026–27, UC Davis lists the following estimated total costs before aid, by living arrangement. These are estimated three-quarter budgets, not guaranteed bills; figures may change, and individual aid affects net cost: UC Davis undergraduate cost estimates.

UC Davis living arrangement Estimated total cost before aid, 2026–27
Residence hall $49,009
Campus apartments $47,590
Campus studio apartments $57,549
Off campus $44,661
Living at home $37,893

These UC Davis estimates illustrate why living arrangements matter; they are not a direct comparison with Sacramento State or a Los Rios college. For an apples-to-apples decision, use each institution’s current budget for your residency, enrollment year, and housing plan, then subtract grants and scholarships to estimate your net cost. Keep loans separate from gift aid when judging affordability.

Los Rios says most students will pay no tuition fees through its Promise program, but eligibility and other costs vary. Check the program’s current conditions and your own fees, books, transportation, and living costs rather than assuming community college will be free: Los Rios Promise program.

Decide whether UC Davis is within your practical search area

UC Davis is in Davis, not Sacramento proper. It can be relevant if you are willing to consider the broader Sacramento region, especially for a student whose preferred major and transfer preparation fit. Whether it is workable depends on your actual commute, housing, schedule, and responsibilities; the institutional cost estimates do not determine a student’s personal travel or housing costs.

Check whether daily life and support make the choice workable

A program can be academically suitable and still be a poor practical fit. Compare each candidate using the same questions, and verify answers with the campus rather than relying on assumptions:

  • Access and time to degree: Are required courses offered often enough for your intended schedule? What is the realistic sequence to finish?
  • Commute and housing: Can you reliably get to classes, and does the budget reflect your likely living arrangement?
  • Work and family responsibilities: Do class times, enrollment patterns, and support services fit your other commitments?
  • Financial aid: What grants, scholarships, and other aid are available to you, and what costs remain after aid?
  • Advising and student support: Ask about academic advising, disability support, counseling, and help with transfer planning.
  • Learning environment: Visit or contact the campus to gauge whether its size, setting, and student experience suit how you learn.

Before committing, contact the colleges about questions specific to your program, schedule, housing, and circumstances. Published pathways and budgets are useful planning tools, but they do not settle individual course availability or personal logistics.
