You usually cannot tell from the siren’s sound alone whether it is a test or a real alert. If you hear one and cannot confirm an announced test, go indoors, check official alerts for your location, and shelter immediately if a Tornado Warning is in effect. Siren schedules and activation rules are local, not universal.

What to do when you hear a siren

  1. Go indoors first. If the siren is unexpected or you are unsure, get inside rather than waiting outside to identify the sound or see whether it stops. Outdoor sirens are designed primarily to warn people who are outside; they may not be heard inside a home or other building. (National Weather Service siren guidance)
  2. Check current official information from shelter. Look for National Weather Service alerts for your location and announcements from your city or county emergency management or public safety office. Local media may also carry updates.
  3. Act on the warning, not the tone. A Tornado Watch means tornadoes are possible, so stay alert and be prepared. A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar: move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows. The NWS describes it as “Tornado Warning: Take Action!” (NWS: Understand Tornado Alerts)

Can the siren sound tell you it is a test?

There is no universal sound code that reliably distinguishes a test from a real activation. Local governments set their own schedules and activation policies; sirens can also be used for hazards beyond tornadoes in some communities. Treat the siren as a prompt to get indoors and find out what is happening, not as a detailed message about the hazard, affected area, or how long danger will last. (NWS Quad Cities outdoor siren FAQ)

How to judge a scheduled test

A test is more likely when the responsible local authority has announced one and it matches that community’s published schedule. That is useful context, not proof: schedules differ, and local policies may postpone or cancel tests during threatening weather.

For example, Boone County, Missouri, says it tests its sirens at noon on the first Wednesday of each month, but may cancel a test if threatening weather occurs. This schedule applies to that county, not to other places. Check the official city or county site or public information channels for the schedule and cancellation policy where you are. A statewide drill is not necessarily the same as a local siren test. West Virginia’s drill FAQ says its statewide drill does not necessarily activate every jurisdiction’s sirens; the county emergency management director decides whether to activate them. It also says Wireless Emergency Alerts disregard that drill’s message because it is identified as a test. Those details describe that drill and should not be assumed to apply to other states or alert systems. (West Virginia tornado drill FAQ)

What the siren cannot confirm

  • Whether your exact location is under a warning: Check current official alerts; the siren itself may not explain boundaries.
  • Whether the danger has passed: Sirens do not provide an all-clear signal. If the siren stops, remain sheltered until official updates indicate it is safe.
  • Whether everyone indoors heard the warning: Outdoor sirens may not be audible inside. The NWS recommends a NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards for indoor alerts at home or work. Where available, enable and verify official phone alerts as another way to receive warnings. (NWS Quad Cities outdoor siren FAQ)
