Prepare a historic wooden boat for drydocking by documenting its condition, agreeing on a vessel-specific lift and support plan with the yard and qualified specialists, and deciding in advance how the exposed hull will be inspected, repaired and protected. Historic-vessel guidance emphasizes that the haul-out itself can damage a boat if support does not account for its hull shape, overhangs and concentrated loads. There is no single safe lift method or drying schedule for every wooden vessel.
Build the plan before scheduling the haul-out
Start with the boat’s records and current condition, then give the yard enough information to plan the lift and blocking. The National Park Service’s Historic Vessel Preservation Standards call for qualified periodic examination, planned repairs and care to avoid damage during hauling.
Gather records and make a baseline condition map
- Collect construction and repair history, previous drydock notes, survey reports, and records of leaks, movement or earlier structural concerns.
- Take dated photographs of the boat before work starts. Add a simple sketch or hull map marking visible damage, recurring leaks, suspect seams and areas that need inspection.
- Agree with the yard and shipwright on what will be recorded ashore: starting condition, areas exposed, defects, measurements, repair decisions and materials used. The Australian National Maritime Museum’s account of Duyfken’s 2025–26 haul-out describes an updated hull scan as a way to record construction and change over time.
Give the yard vessel-specific information
Contact the yard early and provide the boat’s dimensions, known weight or displacement, hull and keel form, appendages, bow and stern overhangs, heavy machinery or deck equipment, and any known weak areas. Ask how the proposed lift, cradle or dock arrangement and blocking or shoring will accommodate those features, how inspection access will be provided, and what preparation the yard requires.
For significant decay, structural weakness or an uncertain history, involve a qualified wooden-boat surveyor or experienced shipwright in reviewing the condition and support plan. Agree who has authority to pause the operation if the boat moves unexpectedly or a new concern appears.

Decide what to remove, secure or support
Before the lift, decide with the yard and qualified specialist whether masts, rigging or heavy equipment should be removed, secured or separately supported. Do not remove structural parts or introduce new loads on your own: the right choice depends on this vessel and its planned support.
Coordinate the lift and support
Historic-vessel guidance calls for adequate support out of the water, including at overhanging bow and stern sections, and for loads from masts, machinery and heavy deck equipment to be transferred to blocks or shores where needed. Extra attention is important when major structure is weak. These are planning principles, not a universal blocking diagram; the yard and qualified professionals must agree on a plan for the particular boat.

Confirm the arrangement before transfer
- Confirm that the planned slings, travel lift, cradle or dock suit the hull and that the operator and yard staff have a clear communications plan.
- Verify how the hull will be supported once water support is removed, including overhangs and concentrated loads.
- During transfer and blocking, watch for movement, new cracking, distortion or unexpected loading. Stop and have the yard’s responsible person assess a concern before proceeding.
No one lift method is established as right for all historic wooden boats. For example, Duyfken’s account documents a travel-lift haul-out, but that is an example for that vessel, not a recommendation for every hull.
Inspect the boat systematically while it is exposed
Once the boat is safely supported, photograph the exposed hull and inspect inside and out against the baseline map. The U.S. Coast Guard’s NVIC 7-95 wooden-vessel inspection manual discusses hull damage, caulking and fittings; its observations should be applied to the individual boat by a competent professional.

Check structure, seams and fittings
- Examine planking and seams, keel and garboards, frames and major timbers, and fastenings for deterioration or movement.
- Look for bilge and leak evidence, then inspect relevant fittings such as the rudder, shaft and propeller supports, and through-hull fittings where applicable.
- Compare findings with known leak locations, earlier photographs and repair records. Record new defects and measurements before repair changes the evidence.
Treat recurring caulking trouble as a structural clue
Repeated seam leaks or lost caulking do not necessarily mean the answer is more caulking. NVIC 7-95 notes that extensive caulking problems may point to deteriorated fastenings or frames; excessive hull movement can squeeze caulking out. If the structure is not sound, a caulking-only repair may not hold. Have a qualified shipwright determine whether the structure needs attention before seams are recaulked.
Choose historically compatible repair methods
When seam work is justified, select materials and methods to suit the boat’s construction and established historic practice. The Historic Vessel Preservation Standards favor materials and construction comparable to original fabric and caution against incompatible or irreversible treatments. Document the location and attachment of historic elements before removing or replacing them, and retain records of displaced fabric.

The Erie Maritime Museum’s December 11, 2025 account of caulking U.S. Brig Niagara describes reefing out old caulking with a reefing hook, cleaning the seam, driving cotton and oakum, and paying the seam. It presents skilled work on one vessel, not a specification for every boat; a tool or a familiar recipe is no substitute for a shipwright’s assessment of the seam and hull.

Do not assume that drying ashore is harmless or that one schedule fits all wooden boats. The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum reports that its oak-planked Philadelphia II swells in water and may shrink when hauled. That vessel-specific example is a reason to discuss the expected time ashore, exposure and relaunch with the shipwright in light of the boat’s wood species, seams and condition. Agree how the hull will be protected from weather and how drying-related changes will be monitored.
