Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo zip a folder recursively on Linux, run zip -r archive.zip directory/. Use ZIP when the recipient or workflow needs a .zip file; use tar with a compressor for a compressed tar archive. The distinction matters: gzip compresses data, while tar collects files into an archive.
ZIP, tar, and gzip: what each one does
ZIP is an archive format that can package a directory tree recursively. The Info-ZIP zip manual documents -r for recursive directory traversal. GNU tar creates an archive and can pass its data through a compression filter such as gzip, bzip2, or xz.
gzip by itself compresses files; it is not a replacement for collecting a directory tree into one archive. GNU describes gzip as complementary to an archiver such as tar. When you want multiple files in one compressed tar archive, use tar with a compression option.
Create a ZIP archive from a folder
Use -r to include files in the directory tree:
zip -r archive.zip directory/
Replace archive.zip with the output filename and directory/ with the folder to package. The Info-ZIP manual also documents options for selecting paths, controlling compression behavior, and handling symbolic links. For example, on the documented Unix behavior, zip -y stores symbolic links as links instead of following them to store the referenced files. Choose link handling deliberately if the folder contains symlinks.

Create a compressed tar archive
These examples use GNU tar. In each command, -c creates an archive and -f specifies its output file; the compression option selects the filter:
| Format | Command | Compression option |
|---|---|---|
gzip-compressed tar (.tar.gz) |
tar -czf archive.tar.gz directory/ |
-z selects gzip |
bzip2-compressed tar (.tar.bz2) |
tar -cjf archive.tar.bz2 directory/ |
-j selects bzip2 |
xz-compressed tar (.tar.xz) |
tar -cJf archive.tar.xz directory/ |
-J selects xz |
These switches are documented by GNU tar 1.35. GNU tar supports additional compressors, including zstd, lzip, lzma, and lzop, but less common options can depend on the installed tar implementation and how it was built. Check the local tar manual or help before relying on an option beyond the common examples.

List, extract, and check archives
List tar archive contents
Use -t to list members. For an uncompressed tar archive:
tar -tf archive.tar
GNU tar can also recognize supported compressed formats when reading archives.

Choose the format for the job
- Use ZIP when a ZIP file is explicitly requested or required by the receiving workflow. The recursive command is
zip -r archive.zip directory/. - Use tar with a compressor when the required deliverable is a tar archive compressed with a specified method, such as gzip, bzip2, or xz.
- Use gzip alone to compress files, not to collect a directory tree into a single archive.
- Check the destination system when compatibility matters. Utility documentation does not establish that every implementation supports every format or option.
ZIP and tar should not be assumed to preserve paths, metadata, or symbolic links identically. If those details matter, check the options for the exact utilities on both ends. There is also no universal fastest or smallest choice established here: compression results depend on the data and settings, and the cited manuals do not provide a controlled comparison for your workload.
