The expected further drop reflected oversupply, weaker customer purchases and slowing demand for PCs and servers. It was a forecast reported at the time—not proof of what prices ultimately did, and not a guide to SSD prices today.
What the Q4 forecast meant
Network World reported on October 5, 2022, that TrendForce expected NAND flash prices to decline 15%–20% in Q4 2022. The earlier Q3 forecast had called for a 5%–10% decline; the Q4 figure described an additional expected fall, not a cumulative total across both quarters. The report did not establish the realized Q4 price movement. Network World’s October 2022 report
NAND flash is the memory technology used in solid-state drives (SSDs), among other products. The headline’s price forecast concerned NAND, while the story described implications for SSDs. A forecast for component or contract pricing does not establish the retail price of a particular SSD.
Why prices were expected to fall
Supply was outpacing purchases
The 2022 report described oversupply as the central pressure. SSD makers were reportedly reducing inventories and ordering less NAND during the second half of the year. Memory suppliers, facing weaker sales, were cutting prices to move product; the story said some could be selling at a loss before year-end and reducing production.

Demand was weakening
Lower projected server shipments and a sharp decline in PC sales added pressure. Fewer devices being shipped meant less demand for the flash memory used in their storage, while customers’ inventory reductions further restrained new purchases.
Supplier actions reflected the downturn
Network World reported that Micron’s fiscal Q4 revenue was 19.7% lower year over year and that the company planned to reduce manufacturing-capacity expansion until demand returned. It also reported Kioxia’s announcement of a 30% wafer-production cut in response to market conditions. These are company actions and figures as covered in the 2022 story, not independently re-verified here.

What the report can—and cannot—tell you now
The headline is historical: its “Q4” means the fourth quarter of 2022. It should not be read as a current forecast or as evidence that retail SSD prices fell by the same percentage. The report gives a forecast, not a verified final result, and does not provide a current retail-price series.
The market outlook can change sharply across periods. In a September 30, 2026 release, TrendForce forecast that overall NAND flash contract prices would rise 15%–20% quarter over quarter in Q4 2026. It cited AI-related demand and particularly strong enterprise SSD demand alongside weak consumer demand. This is a different quarter, a different market environment and a contract-price forecast—not a prediction for the shelf price of a consumer SSD. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook

|---|---|---|---|
| TrendForce forecast reported by Network World, October 2022 | NAND flash prices, Q4 2022 | Down 15%–20%; additional to the earlier Q3 forecast | Oversupply, reduced purchases and inventory, and weaker PC and server demand. The report does not establish the realized result. |
| TrendForce release, September 30, 2026 | Overall NAND flash contract prices, Q4 2026, quarter over quarter | Up 15%–20% | AI-related demand and strong enterprise SSD demand amid weak consumer demand. This is not a retail SSD price forecast. |
How to use a NAND forecast when considering an SSD
- Check the forecast’s date and quarter; the 2022 headline is not a current price signal.
- Identify what is being priced: NAND contracts and retail SSDs are different measures.
- Look for the market segment. Enterprise demand can strengthen even while consumer demand is weak.
- Compare actual prices for the capacity and model you want rather than inferring a specific retail discount from a component forecast.
