Electric Era’s EV chargers can deliver more power to vehicles than the site is drawing from the grid at that moment by combining grid power with an on-site battery. In a first-month demonstration, Puget Sound Energy reported 209 kW delivered to vehicles while the site drew 139 kW from the grid—a 70 kW reduction in peak grid demand. That is evidence of peak-demand buffering at one site, not proof of lower total energy use or improved grid efficiency everywhere.

How Electric Era’s battery-backed chargers work

Electric Era’s commercial charging system combines DC fast chargers, shared on-site battery storage, and software that manages power between the grid, battery, and charging ports. The company says its software predicts and adjusts to customer demand, drawing from the grid under normal conditions and supplementing that supply with battery power during peaks. It can recharge the battery when demand is lower. Electric Era’s FAQ and technology page describe this operating approach.

This arrangement separates the site’s instantaneous power delivery from its instantaneous grid draw. A battery can discharge quickly to help serve a brief surge in charging demand, while the site replenishes that energy over a longer period. The site still needs enough energy over time for vehicle sessions and battery recharging; storage does not eliminate its dependence on grid energy or the need for utility interconnection.

What the Puget Sound Energy demonstration measured

In a May 2026 release, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) reported first-month results from its demonstration with Electric Era: 209 kW of peak power delivered to vehicles while drawing 139 kW from the grid. PSE characterized the difference as a 70 kW peak-demand reduction compared with standard fast-charging solutions. PSE also reported 96.5% first-session success and 99.95% uptime during that first month. PSE’s release is the source for these figures.

These are utility-reported results for one demonstration and a limited observation period. They should not be treated as independently validated typical outcomes across Electric Era locations. The cited results do not establish how much energy the site used over a longer period, what its battery losses were, or how much money it saved.

Peak demand, energy use, and electricity costs are different

Peak grid demand

Power, measured in kilowatts (kW), describes the rate at which electricity is being supplied at a given moment. Battery discharge can lower the site’s peak grid import while allowing chargers to provide higher instantaneous power to vehicles. That is the kind of change PSE’s reported 209 kW versus 139 kW figures illustrate.

Total energy use

Energy, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), accumulates over time. A battery shifts when the site draws some electricity; it does not make the energy needed for charging disappear. Overall energy use and balance depend on charging activity, recharge timing, and battery losses. PSE’s peak figures do not quantify these factors, so they cannot by themselves show whether total electricity consumption fell.

Electricity costs

Some utility tariffs charge separately for energy consumed and for peak demand. A lower peak can reduce a demand-charge component where the applicable tariff includes one, but the result depends on the utility’s rate design and how the site operates. Battery size, grid connection capacity, session patterns, utilization, recharge timing, and operating costs also affect the economics. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies load shifting, peak reduction, demand charges, and rate design as relevant considerations for EV-grid integration in its EVGrid Assist resources.

What reliability and product figures do—and do not—show

Alongside PSE’s first-month figures, Electric Era’s current technology page reports 99%+ port uptime, with 98%+ financially guaranteed, and 92%+ first-plug success, with 85%+ financially guaranteed. Those are vendor-reported metrics; they are not directly interchangeable with PSE’s first-month results, which describe one demonstration and period. A guarantee threshold and a reported performance figure are also distinct measures.

In an article published on 18 September 2024, Electric Era founder and CEO Quincy Lee reported 91 MWh across 3,739 charging sessions and greater than 99.5% uptime at that time. These are historical company-reported figures, not a current network total. IEEE Spectrum reported output of up to 400 kW for second-generation RetailEdge chargers; that figure refers to the model described in its article, not every station configuration. A vehicle’s actual charging rate also depends on the vehicle, battery conditions, and station setup. IEEE Spectrum’s report covers the charger output figure.

Who the system is for and what drivers should check

Electric Era describes a commercial system for retail hosts and other site operators, including equipment, software, and operational services. It is not simply a consumer charger purchase. For drivers, the company says its stations serve battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles with CCS connectors; some locations also offer NACS or CHAdeMO. Connector availability varies by station, so drivers should check a station listing or locator before traveling. A vehicle’s connector and charging capability determine whether it can use a specific port and what rate it can accept. See Electric Era’s FAQ for its compatibility information.

What to evaluate before deploying battery-backed fast charging

A lower grid peak is only one part of a site’s decision. Operators comparing charging approaches should assess the connection limit against charger output and expected session demand, along with battery power and usable energy capacity. They should also account for tariff structure, battery losses, utilization, deployment and interconnection requirements, service arrangements, and any resilience requirements. DOE’s grid-integration resources discuss EV charging flexibility and related planning considerations; the value of those measures depends on the local grid and rate context.

Independent multi-site validation of Electric Era’s general cost and grid-efficiency claims is not established by the cited sources.
