Which classic console FPS is most like GoldenEye 007?
Perfect Dark: the closest N64 follow-up
Perfect Dark is the clearest choice when familiar N64 controls and a similar overall feel matter most. Nintendo’s UK Nintendo 64 description explicitly compares its basic feel to GoldenEye 007 and says GoldenEye players should find the controls natural. It also notes a new weapon-selection system, described as similar to the one in Turok 2. Nintendo’s Perfect Dark overview.

There is an important original-hardware condition: Nintendo says the N64 Expansion Pak is required for solo missions and for multiplayer with three or four players. One- or two-player deathmatch and Challenge Mode can be played without it. Check which modes you intend to play before choosing or setting up an original N64 copy.
For local multiplayer, Nintendo describes traditional two-to-four-player deathmatch with choices including weapons, arenas, time limits, frag limits, and character appearance. That makes Perfect Dark especially relevant if what you want to carry forward from GoldenEye is a configurable shared-screen match, rather than only a similar campaign feel.

What made GoldenEye distinctive, and which follow-up fits?
GoldenEye 007 is remembered not just as a console FPS, but for combining split-screen multiplayer with differences in damage by body area and stealth elements. Xbox Wire’s retrospective on the genre identifies these among the game’s contributions to console shooters. Those features point to different priorities: choose Perfect Dark for the closest documented control and multiplayer connection; choose another game below if you are more interested in a different style or a later point in FPS history. Other classic console FPS directions
Doom 64: a Doom-family alternative
Doom 64 is a 1997 console-era branch of the Doom franchise, listed among its adaptations and spin-offs in Xbox Wire’s Doom history. It is a sensible pick if you want to explore a different major FPS lineage. The cited history establishes its place in the franchise, but does not establish that its mission structure or multiplayer reproduces GoldenEye’s. Xbox Wire’s Doom history.

Quake: a shift toward fully 3D environments
Quake is worth considering if your interest is how 3D FPS design developed. Xbox Wire describes its fully 3D polygon environments and vertical maps in contrast with earlier approaches. That makes it a historical change of direction, not a promise that a particular console edition matches the N64 games in controls or performance. The evidence here does not establish equivalence between editions, so check the platform-specific version you are considering.
Halo: Combat Evolved: a later console step
Halo: Combat Evolved is a later-era option if you want to move beyond the 1990s. Xbox Wire says it was revamped as an FPS and became an Xbox launch title. It is less a direct GoldenEye substitute than a way to follow the console FPS genre into the next generation.
How to choose based on what you liked
| What you want next | Try | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Familiar N64 feel and controls | Perfect Dark | Nintendo explicitly describes its basic feel as very similar to GoldenEye and its controls as natural for GoldenEye veterans. |

| Interest in 3D FPS design history | Quake | Its fully 3D polygon environments and vertical maps mark a different design direction; console edition details need to be assessed individually. |
| A later-generation console FPS | Halo: Combat Evolved | A later step in console FPS history and an Xbox launch title. |
What is established about availability today?
The cited sources document game history and, for Perfect Dark, the original N64 mode and hardware requirements. They do not establish current store listings, prices, stock, or compatibility with present-day consoles for any recommendation here. The Nintendo page is UK-specific, so availability and account or store terms may vary by country. Check the exact edition and platform with the relevant retailer or platform store before buying; do not assume an original cartridge or digital version is currently sold.

David Doak, a former Rare writer, described “couch multiplayer” as a pinnacle of gaming and called GoldenEye both a pioneer and an epitome of it in a 2019 interview. That is his personal retrospective view, not an objective measure, but it captures why a follow-up with configurable local matches can be a more meaningful choice than simply picking another famous FPS. How the wider legacy was recognized
In 2025, the Associated Press reported that GoldenEye and Quake were both inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025. Their shared recognition gives another reason to explore both, but it does not make them interchangeable: Perfect Dark remains the closest documented follow-up for a GoldenEye player seeking familiar N64 play.
