Start with Gothic (2001), then play Gothic II: Complete Classic—which includes Night of the Raven—and continue with Gothic 3. You do not need a Gothic save to begin Gothic II. If you prefer a modern presentation, Gothic 1 Remake is another entry point to the first game’s story, not an additional sequel.
Recommended Gothic play order
- Gothic (2001): Begin the Nameless Hero’s story with the original game.
- Gothic II: Complete Classic: Continue the story in the sequel. This edition includes the Night of the Raven expansion, so you can play it as part of the sequel rather than treating it as a separate numbered game. THQ Nordic describes Gothic II as a continuation of the Nameless Hero’s story: Gothic II Complete Classic.
- Gothic 3: Move on to the third numbered game after Gothic II. THQ Nordic announced console releases of the classic trilogy in 2026: the trilogy announcement.
Original Gothic or Gothic 1 Remake?
For the first story, choose either the 2001 original or Gothic 1 Remake. The remake is a rebuilt version of that opening story, rather than a new chapter to insert between the original and Gothic II. THQ Nordic says it was rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 while retaining the original’s atmosphere and story. It launched on June 5, 2026, and the publisher lists PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S availability: Gothic 1 Remake.

What carries over between Gothic games?
From Gothic to Gothic II
Plan to start Gothic II without importing your Gothic save, character build, or choices. A GOG community response says that nothing carries over and that the sequel’s opening accounts for starting over: GOG community discussion. The original Gothic manual documents saving and loading within the game, but does not document a cross-game import system: Gothic manual. Because the specific no-transfer statement is community-sourced, treat this as practical guidance rather than an official technical guarantee for every release.

From Gothic II to Gothic 3
Available official information does not establish whether Gothic II progress transfers into Gothic 3. Do not count on a save import unless the documentation for your specific editions and platform confirms one.
From the remake to classic games
There is no established confirmation that a Gothic 1 Remake save can be imported into a classic game. Treat the remake as an alternative way to experience the opening story, not as a save-compatible prerequisite.
