Hydrants are opened to move water through distribution pipes, clear sediment and deposits, and check that hydrants and valves work and can provide water for firefighting. Nearby residents may briefly see discolored water or notice lower pressure while the work stirs material in the pipes or changes local flow. The exact schedule and effects vary by utility, so follow the notice from your local water provider.
Why are hydrants opened?
A hydrant is connected to the water-distribution main. Opening it gives utility crews a way to move a large volume of water through the pipes, helping flush out sediment and mineral deposits. The City of Vacaville describes hydrant flushing as moving water through mains at high velocity while exercising system valves (City of Vacaville Utilities Department).
Opening hydrants can also be part of checking the equipment and the system’s readiness. Utilities may inspect hydrants and valves, assess pressure or available flow, and identify maintenance needs. Depending on the locality and the work, the utility, fire department, or both may be involved; main flushing and hydrant testing are related tasks, but not necessarily the same program (Village of Carey; City of Tampa Water Department).
What can happen to nearby water?
It may look rusty, brown, or cloudy
Fast-moving water can stir up iron, mineral deposits, or fine sediment that had settled in pipes. That material may reach nearby taps and temporarily change the water’s appearance. A change in color during routine flushing is not, by itself, evidence that the whole system is contaminated. That reassurance applies to routine flushing described by utilities, not to every possible water-quality problem (Clayton County Water Authority; Lowndes County).

Pressure or flow may dip
Some customers near the work may notice temporarily lower pressure or flow. Effects and duration depend on the local system and the particular flushing event; the utility’s notice is the best guide to what to expect in your area (City of Tampa Water Department; Clayton County Water Authority).
What should you do during or after nearby flushing?
While crews are working
- Read and follow the local utility’s notice, including any area-specific timing or instructions.
- When practical, avoid drawing tap water or running laundry and dishwashers during the work. This can reduce the chance of drawing stirred-up material into appliances or staining clothes.
If water becomes discolored
- Wait briefly after the nearby flushing has finished.
- Run cold water until it clears, following your utility’s local guidance.
- Hold off on laundry until the water is clear.
These steps reflect local utility advice for routine hydrant flushing; they do not replace instructions for a boil-water notice, water-main break, or other water-quality advisory (Clayton County Water Authority; Lowndes County).

If low pressure continues
Once the flushing is over, check faucet screens or aerators for particles that may have collected there. Clean the existing screen first; some faucet designs need a special key to remove the aerator, but buying a tool is not always necessary. Contact your water utility if low pressure or discoloration persists, or if what you are seeing does not match the notice it issued (Clayton County Water Authority).

Schedules are set locally rather than following one universal timetable. For example, Tampa Water Department says it flushes every hydrant in its system annually for preventive maintenance. That is Tampa’s schedule, not a rule for other cities (City of Tampa Water Department).
