The second game is an explicit sequel: it follows the Nameless Hero after the magical barrier from the first game is broken. Starting with the original gives context for the sequel’s changed world and returning characters.
Why Gothic 1 comes first
Gothic 1 introduces the Nameless Hero as a prisoner sent to the Valley of Mines, a colony enclosed by a magical barrier. The prisoners form factions within that setting. Steam’s Gothic 1 Classic listing gives this premise and lists the original game’s release date as March 15, 2001.
Gothic II picks up after the hero breaks the barrier. In its sequel setup, prisoners have been released and the surrounding region is in disorder. THQ Nordic describes it as the sequel to the original, so playing the first game makes the change in circumstances—and the return of the same hero—easier to follow.
What changes between the games
| Game | Place in the story | What the official descriptions establish |
|---|---|---|
| Gothic 1 | First | The Nameless Hero is imprisoned in the Valley of Mines, where factions have formed among the prisoners. Steam listing. |
| Gothic II | Sequel | The hero has broken the barrier; the released prisoners and disorder in the region form the sequel’s setup. Steam listing and THQ Nordic’s announcement. |
This is a continuity choice, not a claim that one game is better in combat, pacing, difficulty, or technical performance. The cited descriptions establish the story relationship, but do not provide a like-for-like comparison of those qualities.

For Nintendo Switch, THQ Nordic announced a physical Gothic Classic Khorinis Saga bundle containing Gothic Classic and Gothic II Complete Classic. The announcement described the bundle contents; its suggested retail price was historical and should not be treated as a current price. Does the Gothic 1 Remake change the order?
No. THQ Nordic announced that Gothic 1 Remake launched on June 5, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It retells the first game’s premise, so it occupies the same story position: play it before Gothic II if you want the narrative in sequence. See THQ Nordic’s official announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When starting with Gothic II makes sense
You can begin with Gothic II if your priority is simply to sample that game rather than follow the plot from its beginning. But for a first-time player choosing an order, the established story sequence is Gothic 1 followed by Gothic II; the official descriptions do not support a stronger claim that the sequel is the better entry point.
