If you are looking for the best graphics and camera settings for playing GoldenEye 007 in third person, there is an important limitation: the original Nintendo 64 game is a first-person shooter, and its manual does not document a third-person gameplay camera setting. You can adjust screen framing, aspect ratio, aiming and controls. A separate native PC port adds modern graphics options, including field of view, but its documentation does not establish a third-person gameplay mode.
Can you play the original GoldenEye 007 in third person?
No third-person gameplay-camera option is documented for the original N64 release. Nintendo’s manual describes GoldenEye 007 as a first-person-perspective game. Its display settings change how the image is framed; they do not switch the view behind Bond. If you mean a particular mod, emulator feature or port, identify that version before following settings advice because its options may differ.

Best display settings for the original N64 game
Use the settings that suit your television and preferred image framing. The manual offers screen modes and aspect-ratio choices, but does not designate one combination as best for every setup.
| Option | Choices | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | Full, Wide or Cinema | Choose the framing that looks right on your display. This setting does not create a third-person view. |
| Ratio | Normal or 16:9 | The manual says 16:9 is suited to larger or widescreen televisions. Choose based on your display rather than assuming it is universally preferable. |
To adjust these options, open the game’s in-game options and select the screen mode and ratio. The manual documents the choices, but does not specify a single ideal setting for modern televisions or emulation.

- This game is an authentic copy.
Other useful N64 aiming and control options
These options affect aiming or information on screen, not the camera perspective. Set them to match your play style:
- Auto-aim: On or Off.
- Aim Control: Hold or Toggle.
- Look Ahead: On or Off.
- Sight On-screen: On or Off.
The original game also has multiple controller schemes. The two-controller styles use two sticks for movement and looking axes. That can change how aiming feels, but it does not make gameplay third-person. The GoldenEye Depot control reference is an unofficial fan resource, so treat it as a control reference rather than an official Nintendo guide: GoldenEye Depot controls.

Graphics settings in the native PC port
The separately maintained GoldenEye PC Port is a versioned project, not the original N64 game. Its v0.4.0 documentation lists native widescreen support, field-of-view adjustment, MSAA, filtering, resolution and other video controls. For a widescreen display, native widescreen is a reasonable starting point; adjust FOV and image-quality options to your preference and performance rather than relying on a supposedly universal preset. The available graphics options do not, by themselves, confirm a third-person gameplay mode.
For Steam Deck, the port documents first-launch Game Mode defaults of 1280×800 fullscreen, VSync, 2× MSAA and 250% draw/LOD distance. These are the project’s Deck defaults, not independent test results or recommendations for N64 hardware. The README says an existing configuration file can take precedence over the first-launch preset.

Choosing controls on PC
The PC port supports a modern dual-stick controller layout. Choose it if you prefer the familiar arrangement of one stick for movement and another for looking; it is an input preference, not a camera-mode change. The port’s README documents its supported layouts and settings: project README.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know which version you are setting up
As documented for v0.4.0, the PC port is pre-1.0 and requires you to supply a compatible ROM; the README identifies NTSC-U support for that release. Instructions and options can change in later port releases, so check the project documentation for the version you are using. The N64 manual’s display and gameplay options apply to the original release, not automatically to the port or an emulator.
