Google Calendar on the web has a built-in Dark theme. On a computer, open Settings > Appearance, select Dark, then click Done. Google announced the refreshed interface in October 2024; its current Help Center documents the setting.
How to enable dark mode in Google Calendar on the web
- Open Google Calendar on a computer.
- At the top right, click Settings.
- Choose Appearance.
- Select Dark.
- Click Done.
These are Google’s current desktop instructions. The setting is part of Calendar’s web interface, not a separate download or extension. Google says a dark theme may offer a more comfortable viewing experience and could reduce battery use; it does not promise a measured saving.
What the appearance options mean
Google announced three choices for the refreshed web interface: Light, Dark, and Device default. Choose Dark to use the dark appearance, Light for the light background, or Device default if you want the appearance option to defer to the device. Google’s cited help page does not specify exactly how Device default behaves across operating systems.
Can you change calendar colors in dark mode?
No. Google says you cannot change the color set while Calendar is set to Dark or Device default. Color-set changes are available when the background is set to Light. See Google Calendar Help for the current setting details.

Who can use the web theme, and what changed?
Google listed the refreshed Calendar experience for Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and people using personal Google accounts. Administrators do not control this appearance setting; users select their own theme. The refresh updated controls, typography, and icons, and included the task list view. Google said visits to tasks.google.com would redirect to the refreshed interface, where users could choose a light or dark mode.

No. Google’s October 23, 2024 announcement said the Rapid Release rollout could take up to 15 days for visibility; Scheduled Release was to begin December 2, 2024 and could take longer than 15 days. Those were rollout estimates for the 2024 launch, not a current waiting period. The feature is now documented in Google’s Help Center.

Google also cautioned that the broader visual refresh could affect active Chrome extensions, which might not work as expected. If an extension has trouble with Calendar, Google advised contacting its developer.
