DCamProf is free, open-source command-line software that turns camera spectral sensitivity data or measurements of a test target into camera profiles. It does not measure a chart or automatically supply a profile for your camera: for a chart-based workflow, you first need reliable target measurements from compatible companion software such as Argyll CMS. DCamProf can export profiles as DCP or ICC files, depending on the downstream workflow. DCamProf project documentation
What DCamProf does—and what it does not do
DCamProf is a profiling engine for creating and working with camera profiles. Its documented inputs include measurements of a test target and camera spectral sensitivity functions (SSFs). It can import and export Argyll measurement data, optimize matrices and lookup tables, test profiles under a selected illuminant, generate reports and plotting data, simulate spectra, analyze camera color separation, edit profiles, generate test charts, and correct for uneven chart lighting. It is not a camera, chart reader, or measurement device. For target-based profiling, measurements must be produced or prepared separately. The author identifies Argyll CMS as a free, open-source tool that can create a .ti3 measurement file for DCamProf to read. DCamProf documentation
What you need to create a profile
Target-based input
Use a compatible color reference target and the reference patch data appropriate to that target and measurement workflow. A 24-patch ColorChecker is one documented physical-target option: RawPedia’s example uses one, and X-Rite describes the ColorChecker Classic as a 24-patch reference target for camera-profile creation. A chart’s appearance alone is not enough; its patch layout and reference data must match what the measurement software expects. RawPedia’s DCP workflow · X-Rite ColorChecker information

Capture the target under the illuminant or illuminants relevant to your profile, then use measurement software to produce data DCamProf can consume. The result depends on the target reference values, capture and measurement quality, and assumptions about the light and camera—not just on the profile-generation software.
Camera spectral sensitivity functions
DCamProf can also work from camera SSFs. The author describes this route as offering flexibility and convenience, particularly for spectral analysis, but says SSFs are not required to make profiles. It is an alternative input path, not a setting that every user must obtain before profiling. DCamProf documentation

Choose the output for your raw-conversion workflow
DCamProf can export DNG camera profiles (DCP) and ICC profiles. Pick the format your downstream software supports and expects. ICC profiles may render differently in different raw converters because raw-processing pipelines are not standardized; a profile file by itself therefore does not guarantee identical results across applications. Example: a dual-illuminant DCP workflow
RawPedia documents an example that builds profiles from two captures of a 24-patch ColorChecker under different illuminants and combines them into a dual-illuminant DCP. - Capture the target twice. Photograph the 24-patch chart under two different illuminants, following the target and capture requirements for the workflow you intend to use.
- Prepare reference images in RawTherapee. RawPedia’s example prepares the images before measurement.
- Measure with ArgyllCMS. Run
scaninwith the ColorChecker chart layout and reference data to produce target measurement data. - Generate a profile for each measurement. Use DCamProf’s
make-profileon the resulting target data, with the appropriate illuminant for each profile. - Combine the profiles. Use
make-dcpto create the dual-illuminant DCP. In RawPedia’s example, pass the tungsten profile first and the daylight profile second. - Match the camera name in RawTherapee. The guide says to use the camera name as RawTherapee identifies it; it also describes where DCP profiles are typically installed.
Do not copy the illuminant order or chart-layout settings blindly into a different workflow. In the documented example, both the order of the input profiles and the camera’s recognized name affect how the resulting DCP is used. RawPedia workflow details
Accuracy, smoothness, and practical limits
Profile optimization involves a trade-off between matching measured patches and keeping the correction smooth. The default LUT optimization favors smoothness; the author warns that pushing full patch matching more aggressively can reduce smoothness. RawPedia characterizes the default smoothing as a more robust choice for general-purpose use. Adjust advanced optimizer settings only when you have a reason to prioritize a different balance. A generated profile should not be treated as objectively accurate solely because the software completed successfully. The quality and relevance of the measurements, illuminant assumptions, target reference values, camera linearity assumptions, and intended raw converter all matter. DCamProf models the camera as linear for profiling and describes its colorimetric correction as a 2.5D LUT. For the narrower task of reproducing known printed media whose spectra vary with lightness, the author says a full 3D LUT may be more exact; using Argyll for that approach limits output to ICC profiles. The official repository lists LCMS2 and libtiff as build dependencies and says to build the executable from the source folder with make. It links to the project documentation and RawPedia tutorial and identifies the license as GNU GPL version 3. The author’s documentation lists Windows 64-bit and Mac OS X downloads for version 1.0.6 and says Linux users can compile from source; those are the documented download details, not a claim that a current release has been independently tested. If you want a graphical interface rather than command-line control, the author names Lumariver Profile Designer as a commercial GUI alternative based on DCamProf technology and describes it as closed source. The available documentation does not establish a current price or a performance comparison, so choose between them on interface preference and whether you need DCamProf’s exposed workflow controls. X-Rite’s ColorChecker Passport Photo 2 page marks that product out of production and directs visitors to Calibrite for its upgrade. For a chart-based DCamProf workflow, look for a compatible 24-patch reference target and confirm that the matching reference data and chart layout are supported by your measurement process rather than assuming any chart will work.
