Navidrome is a self-hosted music server that streams music files you provide through a web browser or compatible player apps. It does not supply a music catalog: you bring the collection, choose where Navidrome runs, and connect from a listening client.
What Navidrome does
The Navidrome project describes it as an open-source, web-based music collection server and streamer. It indexes your collection and makes it available over your network, or wherever you configure access, through its web interface and third-party Subsonic-compatible clients. The project distributes Navidrome under the GNU GPL v3 license.
That makes Navidrome an option for listening to music you already own or otherwise have stored as files—not a replacement for a streaming catalog or a source of songs. The software can run on Linux, Windows, macOS, Docker, and supported ARM hardware such as Raspberry Pi. The project says it can run on modest hardware, including a Raspberry Pi Zero; that is not a guarantee of performance for every library or use pattern.

How to listen: browser or compatible player app
Use the web interface
Navidrome includes a web UI, so you can access your collection in a browser without first choosing a separate player app. This is the simplest way to try the server once it is installed and running.
Use a Subsonic-compatible client
Navidrome also works with third-party apps that implement the Subsonic API, including OpenSubsonic-compatible clients. The project overview lists mobile, desktop, TV, and vehicle listening contexts. Compatibility does not mean every client exposes every Navidrome feature: check the current official overview and client directory for a client suited to your device and the features you need.

The player and the server are separate choices. You can change listening apps without changing where your music is hosted, subject to the app’s compatibility and feature support.
How Navidrome organizes a collection
Navidrome’s folder-like browsing is based on music tags, not a direct view of your computer’s filesystem hierarchy. The project describes a structure resembling /AlbumArtist/Album/01-Song.ext. If you expect the app to reproduce your actual directory tree exactly, this distinction matters: organize and maintain useful tags if you want the collection to browse cleanly by artist, album, and track.

The overview lists features including multiple user accounts, multiple libraries with user-specific access controls, playlists and smart playlists, scrobbling, lyrics from embedded tags or external files, public shares, jukebox mode, and internet radio through the Subsonic API. It also lists audiobook bookmarks and playback-queue support. Which of these you can use comfortably depends in part on the client you select.
Choose where to run Navidrome

The official installation guide names PikaPods and Zenith as managed-hosting options. Navidrome’s README describes PikaPods as an officially supported cloud-hosted solution and says a revenue share helps fund development. The documentation does not establish current prices or other commercial terms.

Install directly or on a Raspberry Pi
The installation guide lists Linux builds for Intel and ARM in 32- and 64-bit variants, Windows Intel builds in 32- and 64-bit variants, and macOS Intel 64-bit builds. ARM owners, including Raspberry Pi users, should match the download to the system’s architecture rather than assume every ARM build will work on every board. The project also provides official Raspberry Pi binaries.
The guide says ffmpeg is required for Navidrome to work properly. Follow the current platform-specific installation instructions, install that dependency, and give Navidrome access to the music and application-data locations it needs. A Raspberry Pi is one possible host, not a prerequisite; an existing suitable computer or managed hosting may be a better fit.

Install with Docker
The official Docker guide lists images for linux/amd64, linux/arm/v6, linux/arm/v7, and linux/arm64. Its example maps the music collection to /music and persistent application data to /data. Use the guide’s current example and replace its host paths with the actual locations on your system.
- Choose a Docker host and an image architecture that matches it.
- Mount your music directory at
/musicand a persistent data directory at/data, following the official Docker instructions. - Give the configured container user read access to the music directory and read/write access to the data directory.
- Start the container and open Navidrome’s web interface to check that it starts and can index the collection.
Incorrect permissions can leave the library empty or prevent startup. The Docker guide warns against using root in production as a permissions workaround; correct the directory ownership or access settings instead.
What to check before choosing a setup
- Host: Decide whether you want to maintain a computer or container yourself, or use a managed provider.
- Storage: Identify where the music lives and whether that location will remain available to the server.
- Permissions: Ensure Navidrome can read music files and, for Docker, write to its persistent data directory.
- Organization: Check that your tags support the artist, album, and track browsing you expect.
- Client: Verify the specific Subsonic-compatible app supports your device and the features you want, rather than assuming all clients are alike.
