Yes. Decision trees are a family of modeling methods, not a format limited to spreadsheet rows. Researchers have adapted tree-based models to use graph structure, image content, and neural-network representations. But an ordinary tree that tests columns in a table does not automatically know how to interpret raw pixels or graph neighborhoods: the split rules and input representation must be designed for the task.
What changes when a tree moves beyond a spreadsheet?
A conventional decision tree repeatedly tests features—for example, whether a value is above a threshold—and follows branches to a prediction. That familiar setup works naturally when each example is represented by a manageable set of features.
Images and graphs have additional structure. An image has spatially arranged pixels or regions; a graph has vertices connected by relationships. A method for these inputs must decide what information a split can inspect, how that information is represented, and what output the tree should produce. The tree idea remains, but the questions asked at its branches may be quite different.
How decision trees can use graph data
TREE-G: splits informed by topology
TREE-G, presented at AAAI 2024, is a concrete example of a graph-specific design. It combines features attached to graph vertices with topological information, so a split can use more than an isolated row of feature values. Its pointer mechanism also allows a split node to draw on information computed by earlier splits. This is a redesign of what the tree can see when examples are related through a graph, rather than a conventional tabular tree simply receiving a graph unchanged. Read the TREE-G paper.

The paper’s framing compares the approach with graph neural networks, but that framing alone does not establish that TREE-G generally outperforms graph neural networks. The appropriate comparison depends on the task and should be measured on the data at hand.
How decision trees have been used with images
Decision Tree Fields for image labeling
Decision Tree Fields, published at ICCV in 2011, applies trees to discrete image-labeling problems. The method combines and generalizes ideas associated with random forests and conditional random fields. Its local interactions among image variables are determined by decision trees evaluated on image data, allowing those interactions to vary with image content. Read the Decision Tree Fields paper.

This is a research example showing how tree components can be adapted to image structure, not evidence that Decision Tree Fields represents today’s state of the art. It also illustrates why “tree for images” need not mean one small, hand-readable tree whose branches test individual raw pixels.
Why combine trees with neural networks?
A 2023 review surveys decision trees beyond ordinary classification and regression, including structured-output prediction and combinations with neural networks. In these hybrids, a neural network can provide a learned representation suited to complex inputs, while a tree contributes decision logic. The tradeoff is that a tree inside a larger model is not necessarily as transparent as a compact tree a person can inspect from root to leaf. Interpretability depends on what the tree represents, how large it is, and how much of the overall prediction path remains understandable.

- Input representation: Does the method operate on raw pixels, learned image representations, graph neighborhoods and topology, or features already extracted from the data?
- Interpretability target: Do you need the whole model to be a compact set of inspectable rules, or is an interpretable tree component within a larger system sufficient?
- Task and output: Is the goal ordinary classification or regression, assigning labels across an image, or predicting outcomes for graph-linked examples?
- Empirical fit: Evaluate predictive quality, computational cost, and model size on the actual task. There is no universal winner across these modalities established by the cited examples.
The evidence cited here focuses on image and graph examples and reviewed neural/tree hybrids. It does not establish a comprehensive account of every structured modality, such as audio, video, or text.
