The best-supported named borate producers outside Turkey are Rio Tinto’s U.S. Borax operation in California, Quiborax in Chile, and Borax Argentina and Minera Santa Rita in Argentina. They are confirmed examples, not a complete global roster. Here, “boron production” means mining borate minerals or making boron-bearing compounds such as boric acid and borax—not producing elemental boron metal.
Named boron producers outside Turkey
Company descriptions and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) operating information support these four examples. Their activities span mining, processing and refined products, so the companies should not be treated as interchangeable producers.
| Company | Country and operation | What it produces or does |
|---|---|---|
| Rio Tinto, through U.S. Borax | Boron, California, United States | Rio Tinto says U.S. Borax operates the Boron mine and supplies refined borates. The company reports producing about one million tonnes of refined borates annually and says this represents approximately 30% of global demand; these are company claims, not an independent market-share calculation. | Quiborax S.A. | Surire and Ascotán, northern Chile | USGS’s 2024 review says Quiborax operated Surire and mined ulexite at Salar Ascotán. Quiborax describes extracting ulexite at both salt flats and processing it at El Águila into boric acid. Its site states plant capacity of 110,000 metric tonnes per year; capacity is not actual output. USGS Chile profile · Quiborax |
| Borax Argentina S.A. | Salta Province, Argentina | The company describes extracting and concentrating tincal, then processing it at Campo Quijano into borax decahydrate and an intermediate for borax pentahydrate. Borax Argentina |
| Minera Santa Rita S.R.L. | Argentina | The company describes itself as a family-owned borate extractor and producer, with refined-borate, drying and granular-boron production lines. Minera Santa Rita |
What country production figures do—and do not—show
The latest USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries table reports 2025 production for several countries outside Turkey. It uses different material categories, so the figures below are not directly comparable as company output or market shares.
| Country | USGS 2025 entry | Reported material category |
|---|---|---|
| Argentina | 170 thousand metric tons | Crude ore |
| Bolivia | 380 thousand metric tons | Ulexite |
| Chile | 300 thousand metric tons | Ulexite |
| China | 230 thousand metric tons | Boric oxide equivalent |
| Germany | 40 thousand metric tons | Compounds |
| Peru | 220 thousand metric tons | Crude borates |
| Russia | 80 thousand metric tons | Datolite ore |
These are country-level entries from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, not company-by-company production figures. For the United States, the table withholds production to avoid disclosing proprietary company data; USGS identifies California as the only U.S. producing state. - GROWTH AND HIGH YIELD: Our specialized formula guarantees robust growth and a bountiful crop yield
For additional context, USGS estimated Argentina was the sixth-ranked boron producer in 2024, excluding U.S. production. That is a country ranking, not a ranking of Borax Argentina or Minera Santa Rita. USGS Argentina profile
Chile’s reported ulexite output and Quiborax capacity
USGS reports Chile produced 252,317 metric tons of ulexite in 2024, down from 450,239 metric tons in 2023, attributing the decline to lower regional output. In 2024, the Arica y Parinacota Region accounted for about 85% of Chile’s ulexite and all of its boric acid, according to the USGS Chile profile. Quiborax’s stated El Águila capacity of 110,000 metric tonnes of boric acid per year is a plant-capacity figure, not a measure of actual annual production; the two figures describe different things.

Why a complete company ranking is not established
USGS country output confirms production in Bolivia, China, Germany, Peru and Russia, among other countries, but those country entries do not by themselves identify the current mine owner, operator, processor or product marketer. The sources cited here do not establish a current named operator for every producing country. Nor do they provide comparable company-level output figures for the four named producers, so an evidence-based ranking of those firms by production is not possible from these figures.
To compare companies responsibly, check the same details for each: deposit and country; whether the company mines, processes or refines; product form; whether a figure is actual output or installed capacity; reporting year; and whether the source is a company or an independent authority. Keep ore, ulexite, boric acid and refined borates distinct unless a source converts them to a common basis.

What “boron producer” means in this context
Commercial production commonly concerns borate minerals and boron compounds rather than elemental boron metal. The named examples include mining ulexite or tincal and producing refined materials such as boric acid, borax and other borates. A company may participate at one or several stages, so a mine operator, refiner and product supplier are not necessarily the same kind of producer.
