1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I choose a gaming PC or console for big-budget action games? Start with the specific games you want, then decide what resolution and frame rate matter to you, where your friends play, and what the complete setup will cost. On PC, compare your components with each game’s official requirements; on console, confirm the game and relevant services are available for your console and region. Neither platform is the right choice for every player.
Start with the games you plan to play
Make a short list of the action games you care about, including the exact editions and platforms. A title may be available on PC but not on a particular console, or its features may differ by platform. Check the game’s official page and the relevant store for your region before buying hardware.
For PC, use the developer’s requirements for each game as your starting point. Xbox’s own guidance says, “System requirements may vary by game, and performance scales with higher-end systems.” A computer that meets one game’s requirements is not automatically a good fit for every new release. For console, check the title’s platform listing, edition, and any backwards-compatibility details that apply.
Decide what performance you want
Resolution, frame rate, and graphics settings affect how demanding a game is. Minimum requirements can target low settings and a modest frame rate; higher resolutions or faster frame rates generally call for stronger hardware. Console games may offer different performance or graphics modes, so check the specific game rather than assuming every title behaves alike.

What Horizon Forbidden West’s PC requirements show
PlayStation publishes four performance tiers for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition on PC. The targets below are average performance targets for this game, not promises for every action game or every PC configuration. See PlayStation’s official PC requirements for the full details.
| Tier | Published target | Example graphics card | Processor | Memory and storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 720p/30 fps, very low settings | GTX 1650 4 GB or RX 5500 XT 4 GB | Not specified for this tier on PlayStation’s cited requirements page | 16 GB RAM; 150 GB SSD |
| Recommended | 1080p/60 fps, medium settings | RTX 3060 or RX 5700 | Intel Core i5-8600 or Ryzen 5 3600 | 16 GB RAM; 150 GB SSD |
| High | 1440p/60 fps or 4K/30 fps, high settings | RTX 3070 or RX 6800 | Not specified for this tier on PlayStation’s cited requirements page | 16 GB RAM; 150 GB SSD |
| Very high | 4K/60 fps, very-high settings | RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XT | Intel Core i7-11700 or Ryzen 7 5700X | 16 GB RAM; 150 GB SSD |
These tiers illustrate why “Will this PC run the games I want?” needs a game and performance target in the question. A machine that reaches the recommended tier for one title may not deliver the same result in another.

Compare requirements for more than one game
God of War Ragnarök provides a second example. Santa Monica Studio’s official PC chart lists a minimum tier targeting average 1080p/30 fps on low settings, with a GTX 1060 or RX 5500 XT, 8 GB RAM, and 190 GB SSD. Its recommended tier targets average 1080p/60 fps at medium settings, with an RTX 2060 Super or RX 5700, 16 GB RAM, and 190 GB SSD. The chart’s ultra tier targets average 4K/60 fps at ultra settings with an RTX 4070 Ti or RX 7900 XT. See the studio’s official requirements chart; treat these as targets for that game only.
For a PC purchase, compare the graphics card, processor, RAM, and SSD capacity with the recommended tiers for the games you actually expect to play. If you want a particular resolution or frame rate, use a tier that names that target rather than buying to the minimum and assuming it will be enough. Also check the complete system: a component list alone does not establish how a specific computer will perform.

Compare platforms by access, friends, and features
Whether you should buy a gaming PC or a console depends partly on where your games and social circle are. Multiplayer, cross-play, cross-progression, and save sharing are title-specific; check each game’s support details. Xbox says cross-play works where an individual game supports it, not universally.
Xbox Play Anywhere applies to supported Play Anywhere games: those titles can be played on PC, Xbox console, and supported handhelds without buying the game again. Xbox also describes saves, add-ons, and achievements following players across supported experiences. These benefits do not apply to every Xbox game. Game Pass catalogue titles, features, and availability vary by plan, platform, region, and over time, so confirm the current terms and whether a game is included before relying on a subscription.

PlayStation Studios PC games support mouse and keyboard as well as other controllers, but particular controller features vary by title. For Horizon Forbidden West, PlayStation lists ultrawide 21:9, super-ultrawide 32:9, and triple-monitor 48:9 display modes, which require compatible hardware and displays. It also lists DLSS 3, DLAA, Reflex, FSR, and XeSS support for that game; those features are not a general promise about all PC games.
Xbox backward compatibility on PC is a dated, early-release feature rather than a blanket way to play an old Xbox library. In a July 22, 2026 announcement, Xbox Wire said the feature entered early release with four original Xbox games and listed Windows 11, 8 GB RAM, and 4 GB video memory among its minimum requirements. The catalogue may change; check the Xbox Wire announcement and current game availability rather than assuming a particular older title is supported.

Work out the full setup cost
Compare the equipment and services you will actually use, not just the headline price of a PC or console. For a PC, account for the computer, display, storage, input devices, games, and any subscription you intend to keep. For a console, include the console, games, accessories, any display you still need, and any recurring online or subscription service relevant to your plans. Local prices, stock, and subscription terms change, so check them in your region before deciding.
Storage is easy to overlook: the cited PC requirements list 150 GB of SSD space for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition and 190 GB for God of War Ragnarök. Compare those requirements with free capacity after accounting for your existing library, and verify that any storage expansion is compatible with the system you choose.
Choose the setup that fits how you play
A gaming PC makes sense when
- You want to select hardware for a particular resolution and frame-rate target, and are willing to compare components against game requirements.
- You value PC storefronts, mouse-and-keyboard play, or supported display options such as ultrawide screens.
- You are comfortable with Windows updates, graphics-driver updates, and occasional settings adjustments.
- You want the flexibility to use a controller where a game supports it; controller features are not identical across titles.
A console makes sense when
- The games you want are available on the console you are considering, in the edition and region you need.
- You prefer a fixed hardware configuration and controller-centred play on a television or monitor.
- Your friends, current game ownership, or preferred online services are tied to that console’s ecosystem.
- You prefer fewer component decisions and less performance tuning than a PC typically requires.
Neither checklist substitutes for checking the games themselves. If you are undecided, make a list of must-play titles, note the platform and features each supports, set a performance target, and compare the total local cost of the setups that can meet it.
Quick Recap
Check these details before you buy
- List your must-play games. Confirm platform, edition, region, and current availability on the official game or store pages.
- Set a performance target. Choose the resolution and frame rate you want, then use the official PC requirements or the game’s console mode information to evaluate it.
- Check multiplayer and services. Verify cross-play, cross-progression, subscriptions, and catalogue inclusion for each title rather than assuming they apply across a platform.
- Price the complete setup locally. Include the display, storage, input devices, games, and recurring services you will actually need.
- Allow for your preferred input and setup effort. Confirm controller or keyboard/mouse support and consider whether you want to manage PC updates and settings.
