They are different expansion-era contexts, not interchangeable stops. There is one important story caveat: Blizzard’s February 2026 returning-player guide says Dalaran was destroyed during The War Within, so the Legion version is best described as the Legion-era city, not an unchanged city in the current story.
Which Dalaran should you visit?

Neither is universally “the right Dalaran.” Start with the quest text, expansion campaign, or event instructions: those tell you which version matters for the activity.
How the two versions differ
Northrend: the Wrath setting
Wrath of the Lich King’s adventure takes place in Northrend, with Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord among its starting zones. Northrend Dalaran is the relevant version when following Wrath-era material or an activity that names the Northrend city. For example, Blizzard’s Ulduar Timewalking article gives groups an event-specific instruction to meet Vormu in Northrend Dalaran. That establishes a use for the city during that event; it is not a permanent travel route or a schedule for when the event returns.
Broken Isles: the Legion campaign hub
In Legion, Dalaran was relocated to the Broken Isles and served as a campaign hub. Blizzard’s guide places Khadgar and the “Uniting the Isles” quest there; its Violet Hold preview also describes the city and its dungeon in that expansion context. If a Legion quest or activity sends you to Dalaran, it means this Broken Isles version.

What Dalaran’s destruction means for the current story
Blizzard’s returning-player guide, published February 25, 2026, summarizes The War Within as including “the destruction of Dalaran.” That newer story summary changes how to describe the Legion city: it remains a place players may encounter in Legion-era content, but should not be presented as an unchanged city in the present-day narrative. When the distinction matters, say “Legion-era Dalaran” or “the Broken Isles version.” Blizzard: returning-player guide

Do not assume a travel item and a portal lead to the same version, or that either route is universally available. Access can depend on the campaign, event, faction, or character state. The official material establishes particular routes in particular contexts: Blizzard’s Wrath Timewalking article directs players to Northrend Dalaran for that event, while its Radiant Echoes coverage describes Dalaran as a hub with portals during that event. Neither is a general, always-current set of travel instructions.

For campaign access, Blizzard’s Timewalking Campaign page describes selecting a past expansion campaign and following its quests. Its interface and eligibility details were published in 2020 and may have changed, so use the current in-game campaign selection and quest directions rather than relying on old level requirements. A quick way to choose
- Check the activity. A Wrath quest or Northrend event calls for Northrend Dalaran; a Legion campaign quest calls for Broken Isles Dalaran.
- Follow the current in-game directions. Use the campaign or event instructions shown for your character; an old guide or a portal anecdote may not reflect current access.
- Keep story time separate from gameplay access. Legion content can refer you to its historical Dalaran even though Blizzard’s later story summary says the city was destroyed during The War Within.
