Choose a first laser cutter by the materials you plan to process, then confirm the machine fits your largest projects, installation space, ventilation plan, and safety needs. Diode, CO2, and fiber/infrared machines are built for different work; advertised wattage or a low machine price cannot tell you whether a setup is suitable.

Start with the materials you want to cut or engrave

Write down the materials you expect to use and their thicknesses. Include your most important material, not just the materials you might try someday. Then check the exact machine’s permitted-material list and thickness limits. MIT’s Laser Cutter Safety Guidance and the University of Illinois’ laser cutter safety guidance emphasize checking material suitability; a technology category alone does not establish that a particular machine can process a specific stock.

The following is broad category guidance from OMTech’s 2026 manufacturer guide, not an independent performance comparison. Capabilities vary by model, materials, thickness, and accessories, so verify them with the manufacturer before buying.

Technology General material fit What to consider
Diode Dark wood, leather, slate, and some painted metals. OMTech says diode machines struggle with clear or blue acrylic and transparent glass. Consider this category for wood- or leather-first work, but verify the exact model. Do not use advertised electrical input or a model name as a substitute for checking cutting capability.
CO2 Clear acrylic, glass, wood, and other organic materials. If clear acrylic or glass is central to your projects, check whether the specific model supports your required material and thickness, and confirm its cooling, ventilation, utilities, and installation needs.
Fiber/infrared Direct marking on bare metals or hard plastics. Consider this category when direct marking of those materials is the main job. It is not a general substitute for a wood- or acrylic-focused cutter.

As one example of a model-specific distinction, OMTech’s 2026 guide describes the xTool S1 as an enclosed diode machine and says it cannot cut clear or blue acrylic. That is the manufacturer guide’s description, not an independent test of the machine.

Check the project size and installation space

Compare your largest intended workpiece with the usable bed or work area—not just the machine’s exterior dimensions. Measure the proposed location and allow room for access, exhaust ducting, and maintenance. MIT advises checking a machine’s technical requirements against the facility before purchase; the required footprint and utilities depend on the exact model.

  • Confirm that the usable work area accommodates your largest planned piece.
  • Check the room available for the machine, ducting, access, and servicing.
  • Read the model’s technical documents for electrical, cooling, and other facility requirements before ordering.
  • Check software or rotary-axis compatibility if a planned project depends on either.

Plan ventilation and filtration before ordering

Laser cutting produces smoke and contaminants. MIT’s guidance says a properly set up cutter should exhaust these contaminants, while Illinois advises dedicated ventilation as specified by the manufacturer and maintenance of filtration systems. An enclosure does not, by itself, establish that fumes are being safely removed.

Include any required exhaust or filtration equipment in your setup budget; requirements and compatibility vary by machine.

Check the complete machine’s safety, not only the laser source

A laser’s class indicates a hazard level, but the source’s class does not necessarily describe the assembled machine. UK guidance explains that a higher-power laser can be fully enclosed so potentially hazardous radiation is not accessible during normal use, resulting in a Class 1 product classification. The same guidance describes Class 4 lasers as hazardous for direct beam and skin exposure, with diffuse reflection and fire hazards also possible. Check the complete machine’s classification, enclosure, and what happens when the enclosure is opened.

MIT’s purchase guidance recommends an eye-safe interlocked enclosure and emergency power off. Its exact recommendation is: “Consider only reputable commercial manufacturers that have an eye safe interlocked enclosure, emergency power off, air assist and other safety features.” Treat this as institutional purchase guidance, not a universal consumer certification rule. Safety labels and regulatory requirements vary by jurisdiction; in the United States, consult the FDA’s laser product and instrument guidance.

Do not process unknown or unsuitable materials

Check both the machine maker’s permitted-material list and reliable information about the exact material before using it. Illinois warns that PVC and vinyl can emit chlorine gas and corrode equipment. Its guidance also identifies thick polycarbonate, ABS, HDPE, polystyrene and polypropylene foam, fiberglass, coated carbon fiber, powders, and flammable liquids as unsuitable or hazardous in specified ways. This is not a universal approved-material chart: the risk and machine guidance depend on the exact material and process.

If you cannot identify a material or verify that it is approved for your machine, do not laser it. In particular, do not assume that a material is safe because it resembles wood or plastic that the machine can process.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  1. List materials and thicknesses. Identify the material that matters most and verify it against the machine maker’s approved-material information.
  2. Measure your work and space. Compare your largest piece with the usable bed, then measure the machine location with room for ducting, access, and maintenance.
  3. Verify safety features. Review the assembled machine’s classification, enclosure and interlocks, including what happens when opened, and emergency power-off provisions.
  4. Confirm smoke management. Determine the required exhaust or filtration method, installation requirements, and filter maintenance.
  5. Check site requirements. Use the exact model’s technical documents to confirm electrical, cooling, and other facility needs.
  6. Validate the workflow. Check software, air-assist, or rotary-axis compatibility only where the machine or your planned projects require it.
  7. Budget the complete setup. Include necessary ventilation or filtration and compatible accessories alongside the machine.
