Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →In 2016, two Android Trojan examples showed malware adapting to Android 6.0 Marshmallow’s runtime permission system: Bankosy checked whether a call-related permission remained granted, while Cepsohord prompted users after a permission was revoked. The reporting described requests and checks—not a silent technical bypass of Android’s permission prompt.
What changed with Android 6.0 permissions?
Android 6.0 and later moved dangerous permissions for appropriately targeted apps from a one-time installation decision to requests made while the app is running. The Android Open Source Project’s Runtime permissions documentation states: “In Android 6.0 and higher, the user grants dangerous permissions to an app when the app is running.”
In the 2016 compatibility context, an app’s target SDK also mattered. SecurityWeek reported that apps targeting below API 23 could retain the older install-time grant behavior on Marshmallow, while apps targeting API 23 and above used runtime requests. Users could revoke permissions manually, creating a need for apps that relied on them to check whether access was still available.
How did Bankosy and Cepsohord respond?
SecurityWeek reported on May 27, 2016, citing Symantec research. The two examples differed in purpose and in the permission behavior described:

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
| Malware | Reported purpose | Reported permission behavior | Potential consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android.Bankosy | Financial Trojan | Checked whether permission to call a specified number was still granted. | If access was granted, it could enable unconditional call forwarding. The report connected this capability to interception of voice-based two-factor authentication. |
| Android.Cepsohord | Click-fraud malware | Checked whether permission was granted and prompted the user when it had been revoked. | The report describes a renewed prompt after revocation; it does not establish that a user had to approve it or quantify how often requests succeeded. |
SecurityWeek also listed other Bankosy behaviors, including SMS interception, credential theft, device locking, and data wiping. That list does not mean every function was used in every infection.
Did these Trojans bypass Android’s permission prompts?
The cited examples do not demonstrate Android silently granting permissions or a technical defeat of the permission-enforcement system. They illustrate malware checking permission state and, in Cepsohord’s case, asking the user again after access had been revoked. A user could deny a request. The report provides no success rate for the prompts.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
That distinction matters: runtime permissions changed when dangerous access was granted, but a prompt did not make every request harmless. A user considering a permission request should assess whether it makes sense for the app’s stated function.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should Android users take from the 2016 report?
- Be cautious when an app requests a permission that does not fit what it is meant to do.
- Install apps from trusted sources.
- Keep Android and apps updated. Google’s Android Security Bulletin—December 2016 described Verify Apps as enabled by default on devices with Google Mobile Services and encouraged users to accept available updates. This was historical guidance, not a guarantee that every current device has identical protection or that Verify Apps will detect or remove a particular Trojan.
These examples document malware behavior reported in 2016; they are not current threat-intelligence findings. The cited reporting gives no prevalence, infection-count, permission-success, or financial-loss figures for the two families.
