It identifies NWS versions 3.50 and earlier as potentially affected. The notice explains how authentication could be bypassed and how restricted files or directories might be accessed; it does not establish that a particular installation was hacked.
Can hackers access Honeywell fire alarm systems?
The advisory describes vulnerabilities that could permit unauthorized access to an affected NWS installation. Honeywell says the webserver’s authentication may be bypassed through a browser capture-replay attack. A separate issue could allow access to files or directories that should be restricted. These are potential impacts described by the vendor, not evidence that attackers compromised a specific site.
Honeywell assigned the authentication-bypass issue a CVSS base score of 9.3 (Critical) and the restricted-file/directory access issue a score of 9.4 (Critical) in its 2020 notice. Those are the scores published in that advisory; they are not incident counts or a current assessment of any facility’s risk. Honeywell says customers must assess potential impact in their own operating environment.
Which Honeywell systems are affected?
The notice names the Notifier Web Server (NWS), with versions 3.50 and earlier identified as potentially affected. It does not say that all Honeywell fire alarm panels, products, or installations are vulnerable. To determine whether the advisory applies, confirm that the site uses NWS and identify its installed version with the facility’s fire-alarm service provider or other qualified personnel.

What should an affected operator do?
Confirm the installation and update status
Honeywell says it released a firmware update for the affected product. The advisory does not name the update’s version, and the package requires credentials to obtain. Contact Honeywell or an authorized service channel to confirm the correct current package for the installed NWS. Honeywell states, “This update should be installed by qualified personnel.” Do not rely on an assumed version number or an unverified download.
Limit network exposure
Honeywell recommends isolating the system from the internet or placing it behind a firewall or in a DMZ. If remote connections are necessary, use a VPN or another secure method, and use strong passwords. These controls follow the vendor’s advisory; they do not replace product-specific guidance or a review of the facility’s network design.

Have the site-specific risk assessed
Network architecture and configuration affect the exposure of an installation. A qualified fire-alarm service contractor or industrial cybersecurity assessor can help verify the product and version, confirm update status, and review remote-access and network controls. The advisory’s mitigation guidance does not provide a universal configuration that fits every facility.

Honeywell’s Building Security security-notices page advises users to follow notices and upgrade listed products to the latest firmware. Its index is oriented largely toward Building Security and video products; it does not establish a new NWS advisory or identify the current NWS firmware package for this issue.
