Dark Mail Alliance was a secure-email project announced by Silent Circle and Lavabit in October 2013. It proposed a new email protocol and architecture designed to protect message contents and metadata—not a currently verified consumer email service. The announcement came after both companies shut down their encrypted-email services amid the surveillance disclosures of 2013.

What was the Dark Mail Alliance?

Silent Circle CEO Michael Janke and Lavabit founder Ladar Levison announced the alliance at the Inbox Love conference in October 2013. Their goal was to develop a secure email protocol and architecture that developers and service providers could use. Contemporary coverage described it as an attempt to rethink email’s underlying design, rather than simply add encryption to conventional email. SC Media reported on the announcement and its stated purpose.

TechCrunch described the proposal as an open-source end-to-end encryption effort. That describes the project’s 2013 ambition; it should not be read as confirmation of a current, functioning protocol or service.

Why did Silent Circle and Lavabit announce it?

Lavabit suspended its email service in August 2013, and Silent Circle shut down Silent Mail shortly afterward. Silent Circle said it had not received subpoenas, warrants, security letters, or other government demands and chose to stop the service before one arrived. In its 2013 statement, quoted by CBS News/CNET, the company said: “We have not received subpoenas, warrants, security letters, or anything else by any government, and this is why we are acting now.”

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

The alliance was presented in the context of those shutdowns and the wider surveillance disclosures of 2013. Its proposed response was to build a different email architecture, with security intended to address more than the message text alone.

What was the design intended to protect?

The stated goal was end-to-end protection for message contents and metadata, including information about who was communicating. Metadata can reveal details such as sender, recipient, and timing even when message content is encrypted. The Guardian’s 2013 coverage discussed the metadata problem and the compatibility challenge.

  • USB-C Wired Compatibility (No NFC): Designed for stable USB-C authentication on desktops and laptops, including Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. Ideal for users and enterprises that prefer wired-only security keys.
  • Durable Aluminum Shield, Portable Design: Features the same precision aluminum protective shield for long-term durability. Compact, lightweight, battery-free, and network-free-built for everyday carry and professional environments.

These were design goals described around the announcement, not independently verified properties of a deployed Dark Mail service. A secure-email approach should be assessed on several distinct questions:

  • Content protection: Whether message contents are protected end to end.
  • Metadata exposure: Whether sender, recipient, and timing information remains visible to providers or other intermediaries.
  • Compatibility: Whether users can communicate with conventional email services.
  • Availability: Whether a working service can actually be used now.

Why could a new email architecture be hard to use?

Replacing or substantially changing long-established email protocols can make interoperability difficult. A system designed around new security assumptions may not communicate seamlessly with ordinary email services. The Guardian’s contemporaneous discussion identifies this as a challenge for the proposal, not evidence of a particular compatibility outcome for a current product.

Kingston IronKey Vault Privacy 50 128GB Encrypted USB
  • FIPS 197 with XTS-AES 256-bit Encryption: Provides business-grade security with hardware-based encryption to protect your sensitive data
  • Brute Force and BadUSB Attack Protection: Safeguards against unauthorized access attempts and malicious USB attacks with digitally-signed firmware
  • Multi-Password Option with Complex/Passphrase modes: Offers flexible password configuration options to meet various security requirements and user preferences
  • New Passphrase Mode: Enhanced security feature allowing users to create longer, more memorable password phrases for easier access without compromising protection
  • Dual Read-Only (Write-Protect) Settings: Enables write protection functionality to prevent accidental data modification or deletion when needed

That trade-off matters: stronger protection goals do not by themselves answer whether a system can reach people using conventional email. The announcement materials establish the ambition to create a replacement architecture, but do not establish how a present-day implementation would handle compatibility.

Is the Dark Mail Alliance still active, or can you use its email service today?

The available evidence does not establish whether the alliance still operates, who governs or maintains it, whether current protocol implementations exist, or whether a consumer service is available under the Dark Mail Alliance name. Treat those points as unresolved unless current first-party information confirms them.

Lavabit’s homepage says its mail services remain online but that it is not accepting new users: Lavabit’s current homepage. That is a statement about Lavabit’s own mail service; it does not establish the operational status of the Dark Mail Alliance.
