MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company said a malware attack caused a network outage at its Geneva headquarters during the Easter holiday weekend in April 2020. The company reported that some digital tools and its website were unavailable for a few days, while its agencies continued serving customers and cargo operations carried on. MSC said the incident was resolved by 15 April 2020.
What happened to MSC’s systems?
In a statement and FAQ dated 15 April 2020, MSC said it had taken computer systems at its Geneva headquarters offline as a precaution while it investigated an outage and checked system integrity. After investigating, the company said the incident affected a limited number of physical systems at that location and was a malware attack “based on an engineered targeted vulnerability.” MSC’s statement and FAQ are the source for these findings.
MSC did not identify the malware family, provide a vulnerability identifier, or name a responsible actor. Its public account does not establish that the incident involved ransomware, a particular exploit, or an independently confirmed data breach.
When was the outage, and how long did it last?
The disruption took place over the Easter holiday long weekend in mid-April 2020. MSC said some digital tools and msc.com were unavailable for a few days. The company reported that the website was back online by the early hours of 15 April, its usual online booking channels were available again, and the incident was resolved with internal systems fully functional.

What did the outage mean for shipping and customers?
MSC said its global agencies remained fully functional and continued serving customers; it also reported that terminals and depots operated without disruption and cargo continued to flow. These are the company’s descriptions of its operations, rather than findings from an independent assessment.
In its historical FAQ, MSC listed several ways customers could access services during the disruption: myMSC once restored, the third-party booking platforms INTTRA, GT Nexus, and CargoSmart, or contact with MSC representatives by telephone or email. The FAQ also described track-and-trace, web services, and APIs as available. These statements describe the channels MSC identified in April 2020; they do not establish their availability today.
Did MSC say customer data was affected?
MSC said it was not aware at the time of any data being lost or compromised. It also said the outage posed no threat to parties doing business with it through email or EDI. The company’s public statement does not include independent forensic findings, so those assurances should be attributed to MSC.

MSC characterized the incident as malware exploiting an “engineered targeted vulnerability,” but did not publish technical details identifying the malware, the vulnerability, or who was behind it. The public account therefore describes the company’s conclusion without offering enough information to verify the mechanism or attribution independently.
